Note the gorgeous mortised grip. I realized after casting it over a couple days that the rod is far more sensitive than I'm used to--my working theory is

engraving, can anyone tell me something about Darryl Whitehead rods themselves? Tapers, actions, quality come to mind. How do they perform when fishing? Would
his rods be as well known if they were not engraved (I know not all are)?

I have asked many dealers and some wise forum members regarding identifying original (not refinished) Jim Paynes and have received very few convincing answers.
Can I identify them based on the characteristics below and how do I search for the 'tell-tale' signs? Many Thanks!

1) Payne varnish scent... burnt orange rinds? Is this applicable to all?

I have two questions regarding cork handles on cane rods - and probably any fly rod for that matter.

(1) What causes ridging, where the handle develops high and low spots? It is use/longevity, water, chemicals/sweat from one's hands, any combination
thereof, or something else altogether?

(2) How should one care for cork handles? And how do you keep them clean, and prevent ridging?

Thanks, and sorry if this question has been asked before.
I am contemplating to add a Saracione Mark IV reel for my bamboo rod. I have seen some conflicting information with respect to reel size. Would you pick the
3" or 3 1/4" size for a 7'6" 4wt to a 8' 5 wt. I would like to have capacity for a DT 5 wt with some backing. I have been leaning
