Grilse on the Gander River - suggestions for a rod?

I am off to the Gander River in Newfoundland in few weeks where the salmon run is mostly of grilse - the one year at sea version of the atlantic salmon. A typical grilse is in the 4 - 5lb range. I am thinking an 8'6" 7wt would be the ideal rod - given the need to put out some line and the chance of catching the real thing in the 8-12lb range. Fishing is mostly wet fly with some floating deer hair bugs (and the occasional White Wulff) if the conditions are right

All right guys i am looking for a taper for a 3-4 wt 2 or 3 pc rod under 8ft with a fullflexing med action for primarily small stream dryfly fishing for trout to 12 inches using flies that are from 14-20 and leader lengths to 10 ft casting mostly in the 15-40 ft range.Like rods with a fairly soft tip and no kicks or hinges,swelled butts are sometimes a + ala some F.E.Thomas tapers.

We have a lot of discussions about Orvis Rods on how good they are or "This is my Go to Rod" and " If I only had one Orvis rod which would it be". Much has been said about the Orvis 7/4, which I believe is a 7' 4WT 3 pc rod, its been said that when people liquidate their rod collections they don't sell this rod. This would make a good summer project so I looked thru the search engine trying to find the taper for this rod but haven't been able to. If anyone...

Hey folks-
I just finished building my first bamboo rod. I build a 7'2 5wt. Driggs. I am now looking to make one that would be a good streamer/mousing/big bug/hex rod to use in my drift boat. I was thinking about a 6wt. Something that is a faster model with some backbone. What would you suggest??? I can't wait to start on my next rod!!! I made my first rod with Ron Barch and am in the market for acquiring all of the needed tools... Any suggestions there would be great...

Marinaro Fly Rod Tapers - The Tip Sections are Longer Than Butt and Mids

I am curious as to what your opinions are on this topic. Marinaro's tip sections are longer than the butt sections but the same length as the mid sections, which is very intriguing. The butt sections are the shortest sections on his tapers. He had to have a logical and deliberate reason for doing so and in reading the Marinaro book by Bill Harms and Tom Whittle. I did not catch the reason why this is. I am sure someone out there knows why and maybe I just missed it, after all I did...

Dickerson 8013 vs. 801510.

I´m curious about how close is the 801510 to the well known 8013.
I love the 8013 and want to know if an 801510 would be much slower and heavier or otherwise would be very similar.

last monday my taper library was lost, modern technology... With it went a lot
of the research into my next rod.

As my title suggests, I'd like to build an 8' four or maybe five weight. So far, the
Dickersons 8012, 8013, and the Granger 8040 have been at the top of my list.
But I would also be open to other suggestions. A limiting factor to the build: I've

I have fished the same mountain river, where there are only little trouts (not longer than 9"), with a couple of rod but I don´t find a rod I feel extremely confortable with.
I´m more confortable using an Art Weiler rod with a Garrison 202E action (7' #4, in the soft side) and it is a pleasure to catch so tiny trouts since the rod is soft and bends, showing a little battle with the trouts. Fishing in this streams I use always a Phoenix level taper equivalent to a #3 weight....

9wt striper taper suggestions

I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a 3 piece 9'(or so) for a WF9 line? It will be used in the surf with long casts and big air resistant flies. Where I fish wind is always a factor. It needs to have enough backbone to turn a large fish but not be so heavy as to put me in the hospital after casting it all night long. I may be asking for the impossible, but I figure it can't hurt to try. I am completely open to suggestions. I would even consider a 2 handed in longer...

Hello all,

I am looking for a taper or a suggestion... I am wanting an 8 foot 3/2 DT5 rod with backbone. Something that would be described as med/fast. You know, a great all around trout rod with the power to chuck streamers and the finesse to delicately cast # 24 midges.... tall order!

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi, I'm getting ready to start my first bamboo rod. I really like my TFO med. action 7'6 3 wt. I'd like to have a bamboo that is similar. What taper would you recommend?
Also, the taper info I see in books and on the net. Do those figures need to be divided by 2 to get the size of individual strips?

I've posted a taper analysis tool on my blog that can be downloaded if anyone's interested. It's free. The only thing I ask in return is suggestions that can be used to improve it. FlexRod includes a taper deflection developed by Jim Utzerath. Comparing stress and bent rod charts makes taper comparisons a lot more meaningful. I've posted a note from Jim on the blog that's interesting even if you're not going to download the workbook.

Hi all - I want to build a 6'6" or 7' 3 piece to use as a pack rod (anything in the 3-5 wt range would be fine). Cattanach has tapers for 4 wts of both lengths listed in his book and I was just wondering, has anybody out there built or fished with one?

Or, any other favorite tapers in one of these lengths you'd recommend? I did some searches on the forum and it looks like people think very highly of the 7' 3 piece Gillum taper. Thanks in advance!

I'm planning the 2009' year of building and would like to try out a broad range of tapers. I have only been building for less than a year and have never had any expereince with Bamboo rods other than the ones I have made. I know it would benefit me if I could to a gathering and cast them, but I am unfortunately not going to be able to attend any this year. I thought that I might ask your opinion for which classic tapers should be made to experience the differences in tapers. So...
