Reel maker--- Thanks, That means a lot comming from you--- I have always admired your reels. Would love to talk reels sometime, that could take hours and hours and a lot of single malt . I don't get a chance to talk reels as much as I would like, especially with another maker.

SB...that drag work is most elegant and unique.... your bench made reel work looks to be of the highest handmade world caliber...we need to talk reels sometime over a glass of single malt...p

Here is the Clicker system I designed and use on my bigger salmon reels.
It's pretty heavy duty--Stainless screws, nuts, and springs with aluminum plates.

The classic drag on an EVH Peerless is quite simple: A spring bronze bar with leather pads the press against the inside of the spool face

If you are a real Glutton for Punishment the drag on the EVH Restigouche (Salmon) reel and the EVH Perfection reels are done and adjusted by stepped cams (the three radial ramps in the picture below of the drag arms and drag...

Matt-- there is a Farlow reel in England named "the Barret" that has the simplest variable drag ever made.

An auction coming up on March 11 offers two of these reels, number 66 and 221, that have 4 fingers holes cut through the backplate to allow the allow the spool "to be braked while playing a fish."

That's a difficult comparison to make. Your fixed check is a simple and elegant system, theirs is an adjustable drag. If adjustability is important to you, the peerless system is a very nice solution.

Actually, my father and grandpa both fish Atlantic Salmon on the Gaspe coast of Quebec... Would I still be in over my head to attempt making a reel for them?

Thank you for posting those patent drawings. I wasn't aware
that anyone had patented the "Caliper-style spring" drag.
It's seems to have been used on a LOT of different maufacturer's
cheap reels.

Larry,,Matt.....forget the VomH drag for your first attempt...I have restored quite a few VH's and Zwargs over the years and those spring drags are a nightmare to get right......Horsesho has it right..stick with a simple click and pawl drag....plus the main thrust bearing is not a part thats easy to make...it's one of the 2 reasons it's not easy to reverse one of those old classics to LHW..(the other is the opposite threaded reel handle spindle that also needs to be reversed)...I...

I had planned on making a fly reel while I was in my machining course, however I got stumped on how to make the drag system... maybe it's possible to buy a drag assembly... I don't really know. Does anyone have any ideas that may assist me?
