There will be a memorial service held for George at noon on Saturday June 28th at Slate Run/Pine River. For those who can make it I'm sure you'll be welcome. For those who replied here I know you would be there if you could. I will be driving down from Toronto today and looking forward to meeting those who can make it to the memorial for George.

I can't believe I did not hear of this sooner. My heart is broken, George was a true friend and so willing to share. I am so glad to have been a student of his and to have had him as a friend. Just today, I was talking to a gentleman about my work and when he asked about my learning and inquired as to who taught me; I replied George Maurer, and the man told me that George passed away. I could not believe what I was hearing. I had been sending George some e-mails over the past month but...

Being curious by nature, I had to put Charles' message above into Babelfish online translator and it is so touching I felt compelled to post it here. I never knew him but I read his book several times and I have a rod on one of his tapers. I will always think of him when I fish the rod.

Thank you for the lovely words Sweetwatersister. I am going to send in an in memoria contribution to Trout Unlimited in George's name. In our e-mail exchanges we discussed Harry Middleton's work and philosophy, and I was quite touched when he wrote to me that he was making me an 'honorary member' of the Starlight Creek Angling Society.

George was my brother, in spirit, and we always called each other brother. He was at heart half Indian and half mountain man, and he was most comfortable in open spaces among wild things. I just received a phone call from Jim Reams; he said George Maurer died of heart attack today. You hang up the phone and hope a colossal mistake has been made, but absent the unlikely error, there it is.
