Got my first Leonard and I am tyring to date the rod.

It is a (pre-fire) 48-4 ,7ft, 3/2, 4wt in unfished condition.

I picked it up from The Classic Fly Fisherman and he had it dated at late 50's.

The collectors that I have shown it to clame the varnish on the rod is to good for that time period, and calme 30's or 40's.

Is their any way to tell?

What a nice rod

That stripper guide and writing look like traits of a rod made before the 50's, but I can't quite judge the color of the bag. If it is gray, that is
usually associated with the forties, and khaki tan would be from the fifties. They also used tan earlier, but those bags are of a finer weave. I would guess
that it has had a new coat of varnish at some point. It is always tough to tell from a photo, but the reelseat should not be that glossy, and the varnish looks
too new.

I have them posted in my profile, go to view my image.
Even with an overcoat on the rod, the lady that was doing the varnish work at that time was notorious for dust and even brush fibers in the finish.
We looked at it with a loop and the varnish is extremely clean.
That's the part that doesn't make sense.

Matt is going to post the pics as well.
Thanks Matt

If you post some pictures, we can help. There are many clues, but photos of the bag, tag, grip, butt cap writing, and wraps will settle it.

Gray bags are usually late thirties thru the forties, then tan for the fifties, with a brief period of light blue bags. Photos of the tag (writing style, Ball
point ink vs. fountain pen), and photos the stamp on the butt cap will help a good deal.

Wow, it can be a small world sometimes. CS, I tried to buy that rod but you beat me to it by a few days. My opinion on date of manufacture is similar to
Bob's. I think it is a pre-fire rod but a late one (just prior to the fire) due to the blue/gray bag and wrap color. I think it may have been overcoated
with varnish for the reason you state....it looked too good to be original. To me, it just did not have the look of an earlier rod. I think it would make a
great fishing rod and I...
