Did Granger or Wright and McGill produce an 8 1/2 foot rod other than the 8642? In other words, if I have an 8 1/2 foot Wright and McGill Granger Special, is
it certainly a model GS8642?

Hi Guys, It may have been me with the 16/10 ferruled 8 1/2' 'The Granger.' Here's what I have. The cane entering the ferrules is 16/10. The
ferrules are 17/11. There's no question that it is original but it is odd and has a couple other deviations. The grip is smaller in diameter and length.
It has pinned ferrules. It was purchased by a friend from Marty Keane. It was 'prepped' to be restored as I remember. I restored it for my friend
but he passed away...

John:

Yes, the OD of the male ferrule is the easiest to measure with any micrometer.

As to the 8 1/2-foot Wright & McGill Water Seals--the FA I have is a significantly heavier/stronger rod than the corresponding Granger 8 1/2-foot rods. It
has 12/18 ferrules and I believe it to be a "cut down" Granger 9050 taper.

Regards again,

Hi John:

The 8642 was the only catalogued 8 foot-6 inch Granger taper produced in both the Goodwin Granger and Wright & McGill eras.

That said, some time ago, IIRC, a Forum member reported owning a Granger 8'6" rod with 10/16 ferrules which would make it a more delicate taper than
the standard 8642 (11/17 ferrules).

In my 35+ years of collecting and fishing Granger rods I have not seen such a rod, but that doesn't mean it doesn't...
