Orvis binder?

Hello everyone. As I am getting ready to start building, I thought that I would run this by the forum. This binder was with the equipment that I bought from
Dave Klausmeyer. Dave told me that he thought it came from the Orvis rod shop. Has anyone seen this one or one like it? I have never seen a binder like this
one before. If so, any history would be appreciated. Thanks very much, Jim.

I think you could just buy an alternator belt and make up a simple hand crank with a pulley and handle. Mount angle iron with a slot to the binder base so you
can move you can adjust your crank for the correct belt tension. I think it would work well.

Binding under power is not for the feint of heart. Unless you really need the speed then a hand crank would do it.

Good luck,

Hi Tom, thanks for the input. Your design sure is similar. I got a really nice Garrison stlye binder from Dave and I will most likely use that one. I thought
fun to try and find some history about this one. I'm only an hour from Manchester and the next time I'm there, I'll stop in at Orvis and see if
anyone recognizes it. If it turns out to be from Orvis, I'll probably give it to the AMFF. Jim

Some years ago, I came up with a design based on the same principle. You can see a couple versions of it at bamboorodmaking.com in the contraptions section.
You could run this with a reversible motor, or you could rig a foot treadle like the early sewing machines, or you could rig a crank, as I did. I would
certainly rig support troughs going in and out of the machine. Also, make sure the thread tension is uniform as it feeds out, which is critical to
straightness. The advantage to this type...

Yes, it definitely has a groove for some sort of V belt for turning the large wheel. The insert where you push the glued strips through has a small opening,
too small for any butt sections. But this insert is removable, so I think there must have been other inserts.
