I'm owner of 12 acres of forest and a fishing cabin in the Ozarks near the Current River in MO. I just sent in a response to the survey. I believe timber can be responsibly harvested and forest productivity can be improved by proper practices but the catastrophic strip mine logging and agricultural burning of the Ozark hill sides of the 20s and 30s of the last century must never be repeated. MFRS, I chose the forum to post the survey basically to see what people who spend a lot of time in the outdoors think about forestry. I honestly didn't think I would get the response I did from the forum. The survey also has been used to gather data from those with business, medical, and liberal arts backgrounds.

Spruce, I am currently taking a course in remote sensing/GIS this stuff is great

Hi Sam, I too have a forestry background and these are very basic questions so since you targeted a fishing forum (lay plus professionals) what question are you trying to answer; what are you hoping to conclude from this.

I got my Masters from SUNY Env. Sci. and Forestry at the tender age of 39. Try and pick up skills, such as GIS, that would be useful in other fields if the openings are scarce in yours.

Just took the survey, but I agree that it is not oriented toward most participants of this forum. And there's a definite political, non-scientific bent to the statements. I realize that forestry professionals often feel embattled, but they should have some self-awareness regarding that defensiveness. So I think the flaw is in the survey methodology (& transparency), not the profession itself.

Much of my work has been oriented toward multiple forest resource management with private non-industrial forest landowners, and a fair amount of fire control/fire management with large fire organizations around the country.

I'd say that this is good time to look at grad school because the current economic situation is forcing budget limitations on new hires...both agencies and private sector employers. Hopefully the situation will turn around during the time it takes to earn...

I had fun looking at your survey, Sam. My Master's in Wildlife Science from Univ. of Tennessee had a survey component to it - Farmer's attitudes towards deer and deer damage in west Tenn and Kentucky. I also have degrees from Cornell and SUNY Environmental Sci and Forestry. The first statement - the largest tree in the forest is the oldest - tells the tale. Thanks for your input everyone, for the past few months I have been working with some masters students (and PA bureau of forestry) on a landowner survey to get an understanding of landowners attitudes and what they think is going on out there. Some of the questions I used are very similar to what is on that survey. The way Sam worded his initial post and the survey verbiage, lead me to believe that it may primarily intended for "laymen" , perhaps to gather their "attitudes", perceptions regarding forest managment and the current health of our forest.

If I was a degreed forest expert, I could imagine some problems completing it to my satisfaction! It would be like me trying to complete a survey with 6 or 7 questions on why we are currently in the economic mess we are in....

I feel the same as spruce grouse, for the same reasons. I started to fill out the survey last night, but just couldn't bring myself to do it. I have a B.S. Forestry and 30 years in service specializing in silviculture and protection.

I went to take the survey but there were too many questions that can't really be answered with a yes/no, agree/disagree. Also, some of the questions seemed worded to elicit a certain answer. As someone with a M.S. in Forest Resource Mgmt. I didn't feel comfortable completing the survey.
