I asked a similar question some time ago regarding my favorite Orvis tapers, the 7/4 and the Flea. The consensus here seemed to be that for whatever reason,
Orvis was spot on rating these two rods as WF4. I typically underline all of my other Orvis rods, but the 7/4 and Flea are true WF4s for me. I have tried
both WF3 and DT3 lines on each, but for me, they do really shine with a WF4. (Orvis Wonderline/H & H/or Cortland 444)

I have a 7/4, but haven't tried a 3 wt. line on it yet. I think the rod would work with a DT3 or TT3, but a WF3 might be too light for my taste. Mostly I
use an Orvis WF4 Superfine line, but I've also tried other WF 4 and DT 4 lines. Among those choices, I like it best with the WF4 Superfine, which is the
lightest - the other lines seem too heavy. I just got a WF 3 and a DT 3 for another rod and have them on reels now. I'll try them on the 7/4 once the
weather warms up or if I...

I don't have a 7/4 but I do own 3 other Orvis cane rods and for what it is worth, I underline all of them by one line weight and they all fish very well...
I think you'll be happy with a 3 wt line , whatever configuration you use..
