I once fished a Wagner in 25ish degree weather. The rod performed well with no problems other then a ton of icing on the guides. However when I finished and
went to take the rod apart rather then pulling the male ferule out of the female ferule I ended pulling the bamboo out of the bottom of the female ferule. A
$40 repair plus $20 in shipping & insurance, that was my last time fish bamboo when the temps get below 30. I remember talking to Kusse as well as to the

I just finished up this rod for a friend that's an avid ice fisherman.
It's 30" - medium action, built from a spare 4wt. tip section.
Our high temperature this weekend will be around 5 degrees F. with lows around -15 F.
I've fished my fly rods in the teens and twenties with no ill effects (other than ice in the guides).
It will be interesting to see how this holds up.

Outside of the greater hazard to the rod from iced guides or the danger of pulling an overtight ferrule (or perhaps falling on the ice), I can't see any
reason not to fish cane in cold weather.

The rod pictured above is an 8.5' Beasley that's been fished hard in freezing conditions, and it still fishes the same.
