All of my adjustable drag Medalists have the curved side of the spring riding on the drag shoe, and the straight side into the adjuster.

Bruce, I'll have to look at other reels later. As far as I know, I've never removed that spring.

Ron, a dumb question perhaps, is the "spring" on the drag in your picture corect as to position? In my reels the bent part of the "spring" rides on the fiber block. I have a few of the Medalist and in checking I find that in most but not all the bent part is on the block. Which is correct? The reel I fish for trout is a 1495 1/2 with the spools filled with BB's, I find this tobe a very serviceable reel, although behaps not a classic.

couldn't tell you the date, but the certain way to tell the prewar drag reels is the two-click wind ratchet and the absence of a tensioner boss on the backplate - just a hole.
Also, the brass feed are painted and not plated

Good point Ron about the feature maybe predating the advertising...

These two are the first medalists I've ever owned....they are nice reels, I especially like the feel of the 1494

One more question......do you know when the "Pat Pending" switched to "Patented".....assuming the later reels didn't say Pat Pend?

well, maybe your box, espeically combined with the patent date shows the drum arrived in '35?
The patent drag reels arrived in '37, and I believe the patent date is '38

Thanks, and maybe the 1496 reel doesn't go with the box, but it did not come from a collector and is in new condition, so I'd have no reason to think they weren't a pair?

On one of the site it said the drum patent was 10/35 but the switch was in 37? This reel box is marked 11/35, teh reel has dual springs & pawls, a bronze spindle and an alloy foot. The box says Satin Finish but the reel appears painted? Also in the box was the old clear plastic wrapper and a...

turtledoc, i have some info i printed off the internet but it doesnt have a website address on it. so, i typed in, "old pflueger medalist reels from my collection." in google search. i clicked on the first site of the ones google brought up. the website is actually ,"trouts and seasons of the mountain village." i think this is what you are looking for and it has great info and pics. hope this helps you. wlybgr.

Thanks guys....the sights have some of the info I'd thought I'd seen, but not all that I remembered seeing....

I "thought" that the sight I'd run across had literal breakdown of the different features and models and when they were introduced?
Maybe I'm dreaming...?

I just got a new in box (date code 11/35) patent pending click pawl Model 1496 and a pretty nice shape pat pend click pawl 1494....

I have a few web pages bookmarked that had great info on the history of the medalist but they are no longer active sites.

Can somebody please post a link to some medalist history...specifically when the various models were first produced and when the spoked arbor was discontinued....I thought that it was late 30's, but the 1496 does not...
