There was mention in another thread about a Payne 101L being a fast 4wt.

I can not for the life of me find the taper for a 101L

Does anyone know if the 101L is the same taper as a 100H ?

I don't know if it works the same way with fly rods as it does with bait-casting rods, but it is possible to calculate how much to change a given taper
along its whole length to make it lighter/heavier. Assuming you'll be using the same quality of material for both, and the same construction (i.e.
six-strip hexagonal split cane) one can assume the relative stiffness of the material will remain the same. The only variable is the thickness.

Working on that premise, it should...

Thanks for that info Hal:

I was curious if there was a standard math formula that was used in the shop to change a standard taper to a light version (say a 5wt to a 4wt)? and with those
experiments you mentioned, how many rods got tossed out and how many actually made it into customers hands?
best to you as well,

edit:
Hal: did the 101L rods use step down ferrules or standard ferrules??

The Payne 101L is rare I owned 2 during the 40 od years of collecting Bamboo rods. During the time I owned the Payne shop we built a few 101Ls The Payne 101
rods were cut using the new 2 piece taper sticks, the 100 rod was cut using the old 1920's 2 piece taper sticks. During the late 1950's and early
1960's Jim did a lot of experimenting with different combinations of tapers trying to build a rod for a customers casting style.

Hi John,

I have seen a lot of Payne's over the years and I must say that I have never heard of or seen a rod with that model designation. I do think that if there
was a 101L you would probably be right that it would be similar to a 100-H although the 100-H is a definite 5 wt.
