I hoped to fish with one of my 9' Grangers, but reel foot is too long. Any solutions?

Thanks, Don

Here's a later 3 1/4" (Ernest?) Dingley perfect. It had a horrible homemade foot. I had Bill Archuletta make a new (exact duplicate) regulator screw
and he went ahead and made 2 screws for the foot. (The original screws were incorrect replacements)Bulldog sent me an "Old Young Pfoot", I got the
reel back this week, and it all went together right out of the box. Even the top radius of the foot, where it snugs against the reel body, is an exact, tight
fit. I'm happy....

I understand the appeal of this type of reel. I also don't want to mess it up.

I'm glad I posted the questions. It has really been fun to learn more about these reels.

My experience as well is that almost all the Dingleys are bench made, with the foot being drilled by eye. If you take one off & then try to put it back,
you'll notice that there's always a "correct" alignment--one direction works, the other doesn't. That's probably why the reels all
have feet punched with the same number as the reel interior. The feet were not interchangeable. Part of the great charm of these.

Appearances can be deceiving, dimensions have no consistency at all.

Measured two pre war 3 1/2" reels and the reel foot spacing was 7/8" and 3/4".

Measured two post war 3 1/2" reels and the dimensions were 7/16" and 11/16".

I guess it might be advisable to have the measurement of the reel foot screw spacing on a potential reel purchase prior to buying.

I thought that the dimensions would have been about the same on reels of the same size...

I also looked at a few pre & post war Dingley models and the spacing on the foot screws

Don, I would measure the distance between the foot screws at dead cente(DC), request a later possible Ernest Dingley 3 1/2 with same measurements, in the
classifieds here. You have the three days to evaluate the fit and you may end up with a reel plus a foot at the cost of having a foot made professionally.
Just a thought, and you would have a reel to house your original foor so it is less likely to get lost. The 3 1/2 WB I have is 5/8 " between the screws
at DC so maybe this distance...

stretching) and then tighten the screw ring up to snug it. Also have used leader material in a pinch.

Only other option is to replace either reel seat or reel foot.
