Bad line?

         Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had a problem like this. I have a DT4F line that I just can't get to cast well on any rod that I own. I thought at first
it was the rod, but after 4 different rods, I am starting to think it may be the line. Is it possible I have a defective line?

Thanks, Randy

Weigh it. Fly line weight is an actual weight. the scale starts at 60 grams for a 1 weight and increases 20 grams for each step up, 80 grams for a 2 weight,
100 grams for a 3 weight etc etc etc. If this is a 4 weight line it should weigh 120 grams, or rougly 4 1/4 ounces. Just for measure, one ounce is equal to 28
grams so the fly weight table looks like this in english units, to the nearest 1/8 ounce:

1 weight 2 1/8 ounce

2 weight 2 7/8 ounce

3 weight 3 5/8 ounces

If its a mislabeled 5 it may be overloading the rod. You'll only get a slot limit. The rod won't have enough umph in the tip to turn the line
over in close but, once you get past a certain distance, there won't be enough backbone or "reserve" left above the cork - you'll have run
out of stick.

The possibility does exist that the line is not defective, but mislabeled. Maybe it is actually a 2 or 3 weight line that was incorrectly put in a 4 weight
box. Do you have any lighter rods to try with it?

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I really didn't give a lot of info.Sorry, I must be getting old. It is a 444 by the way. I have 4 or 5 of these lines
right now in different weights and have had many more that I wore out over the years. I really like them, that's why this one has me stumped. I have cast
it on 4 different 4 weights and I can't get it to work well on any of them. I have cast it both on the water and on grass. I always have a leader attached
but I don't always...

Too little info, exactly what is it that makes the line poor? Are you casting short distances, long distances, on the lawn or on the water, what kind of line?
The temp suggestion is good, but if you are casting a line any warmer than 50 degrees or so it should be fine. Is it that loops are poor, turnover poor, or
just seems to take a lot of effoirt to lay out even a short cast? Are you using a leader to test? What about terminal end, fluffy piece of cloth or nothing at
all?
