Hello - newbie here ...

Wanting to get into bamboo and a friend suggested this site. I recently picked up a South Bend 359-9 that needs some tlc and one of the thoughts I have is to
make it a banty rod. Most of the banty rods I've seen suggest cutting the butt section down and mounting a handle so the ferrule is under the cork handle
- the ferrule edge basically becomes a winding check. If I do this the overall length of the rod would be around 6 to 6 1/2'. What I'd like to...

Hi Jack - (gee, never say that on an airplane)

I'd love to get down to Roscoe for the ceremonies on Saturday but there's no way I can make the drive. Some day ... some day. I have been talking to
John (CJ) about a lot of this too and he's been giving me some pointers/suggestions. Cane is all new to me - only cane I've ever cast was JB's last
fall at the one-fly and that wasn't even on the water.

I know the chances this will be a "decent casting...

It doesn't hurt to tape a reel in the two positions. The section sticking out has nothing to do with anything. You don't need to cut it off to really
feel the result. The only problem I see with leaving the butt section a little long is that the deflection will stop at the lower ferrule. Placing the ferrule
at the winding check mimics a swell at that same position. The consensus of opinion around here is that 2 of 3 bantys are pretty iffy. Don

Steve,
If you can make it take a ride over to Roscoe Sat. we will give you all the cane you can handle to cast before you perform surgery.
I did what you are contemplating back in the early 70's when I was paying child support for 4 siblings. I didn't leave the feerule on, just used the
top 2 sections of a 9 footer. It was an ok brookie rod but that's all. It's still here somewhere hasn't been out since the kids got educated and
jobs.

Not screwy sounding at all. I tried that but with the rest of the handle sticking out behind it doesn't feel "right" no matter what I do. I guess
I could cut the butt section down to include the extra 8" or so and somehow dry-fit a reel to it and cast that way. (duct tape is a beautiful thing) If I
don't like it I can always cut the 8" off. I didn't know if there was a "rule of thumb" regarding action when doing something like this.
I know it's...

Steve,
This might seem a little screwy buy try assembling the rod (no reel) , line up the top two sections. Now grab the rod at just below the butt ferrule and do
some casting. The move your hand down 8 or 10" and try again. Should give you a pretty good idea how the cut down rod will cast. I think the 9', 359
was a six weight...probably a good place to start but try a five too.
