More than a year ago I offered a half dozen butternut reel seats on the list. I wanted to replace the reel seat on my dads tournament casting rod. A friend
had some butternut that he got ahold of when he was in on the demolition of a 148 year old house and the butternut was 2" X 2" staircase rails.
Turned them to rough rounds on my wood lathe. It was a perfect match for my Leonard from the 1920's. Wood has turned a beautiful golden color with age.

The hard part is getting the new seat to look like a Leonard. Butternut, in its natural state is a very light wood, almost gray/silver. It really doesn't
take stain very well either. I have read on this forum that Leonard used to "bake" their seats to give them that golden look that they had when
finished. I was also told by a rod maker that they used amber shellac to tone the seat. I have used the amber shellac and have been happy with the results.
Good luck.
