I want to make a hexagonal wooden case that will hold two 7' 3 piece rods.

I guess I could figure this out by trial and error, but can anyone get me started with some approximate inside or outside widths of each strip?

I intend to use alternating 1/4 inch red oak and black walnut strips.

I have made square cases before, but not hexagonal.

Any other ideas?

Bill

I have been making these cases for some time. I use a table saw for ripping strips and edge profiling. My cases are one and one eigth wide and I also think
that a quarter inch is too thick. I use either zebra wood or walnut and finish with a hand rubbed oil. I really like Minwax wood sheen but am about out. I
don't know if they have continued to make this product. Anyway, 4 coats and I'm done.Top cap is attached with a leather strip and snaps

Hello, I make hex rod cases , I use Spanish Cedar very durable pretty and smells good. 1 1/4 width 1/4 thick end caps are made out of black walnut. I use snaps
on end cap and on 2 sides of case . I use thin leather strips to hold. Get a thirty degree router bit for strips, works good usally dont have glue lines, I
also use a forty five degree bit to trim the outside edgers of end caps it adds to the cosmetic look of the case. Use shellac rubbed in on the inside to give

Two ways to make the joints - one to cut sides of strips 30 degrees (can result in glue lines if you are not careful) or use a special router bit and only mill
one side - This results in tighter glue joints if the strips are square and you have a good flat surface - having a jointer helps to get them smooth for
gluing.

I believe there are dimensions and instructions for making hexagonal wooden rod cases in Wayne Cattenach's book on making bamboo fly rods.
