The tele latch is 34-49 and the horse-shoe latch is the early 30's. The tensioners are unique as you probably know.

I just noticed this post. I have a couple of 2 5/8 Uniquas that are quite different from each other. One of them, recently acquired from a forum member, I have used regularly this season. It is very much like oddsandrods reel above except in appearance and of course in size.

Hardy Uniqua 2 7/8" as nature intended. Adjustable check was 5 shillings extra at the time it seems, this knob is indeed nickel silver. On occasion Hardy reels 'in the white' could be made of other metals such as Hiduminium and Duralumin.

IMO, the reel has been "re-manufactured".

While the markings are correct for a 1940's-50's reel, I believe the spool and latch are replacements and that the original, correct spool most likely had a "finger latch".

I'd also bet the original finish was painted, not leaded. Finally, I agree, my similar Uniquas have a nickel silver tension adjustment screw. Nevertheless, it's an attractive and fishable reel.

I agree with all comments. Funky, new latch; tensioner screw should be N/S; & outside highly polished out. I have a couple originals & I don't believe the exterior "Spitfire" (or in the white) finish ever looked as sparkling as this example. Can't comment on the script--it's probably original.

40's or 50's. Wouldn't be concerened with a screw in telephone latch.. or the regulator.

Drag screw should be nickel silver, not brass.
Looks like the finish was stripped.
Even the marking looks odd ...but nothing definitively wrong with it.

IMHO, your friend has what appears to be a very usable 2 5/8th Uniqua with a colorful past.......if only reels could speak.

The frame has an "in the white" look to it but the back plate especially is polished. The in the white reels were not shiny, they just weren't leaded.

Regarding the logo, that is a script that does date to the late 40's / early 50s and would be at least near the time frame when many of the "unleaded"...

Very recent acid bath by the looks of the brass pieces; the latch looks 'home made'?

I am sure no Hardy expert, but the tension regulator knob looks to me to have more of a "gear tooth" machining to it vs.the "knurling" that I am used to. I can't find the script in my references, but my brain tells me I've seen this script before. Maybe in some post-war reels?

I've got a feeling this is going to be a very educational thread- at least for me!

Heinz - strange feeling here also - I am sure that I would be describing the finish as 'highly polished' rather than 'spitfire' and the reel looks to have some 'new' parts fitted, latch screw, maybe more. Not sure about the script - I am not near my reference's.

This reel have just been purchased by a friend who mailed me fllwg. pics. He advises 2 5/8" Uniqua "Spitfire" fisnish, with the rare tension regulator - super condition.

But - am I the only one getting a strange feeling .........why is the 'writing' not curved - spitfire fisnish etc........? Pls. comment - perheps you can help me get rid of that feeling, so I...
