With a plastic line, you try to match the diameter of the line end with the diameter of the leader (more or less). Since a silk line will have a smaller
diameter than a plastic line, should the diameter of your leader butt still match the diameter of the line, and if so, can you match the nylon leader butt
diameter without using a smaller (lower) breaking strength leader ?

Also, standard...

I too followed Olaf's suggestion (to replace the usual stiff butt section of a hand made leader with soft material, so the the whole leader is soft) and
have had excellent results tying my own leaders nail-knotted to my silk lines. There are a lot of leader formulas to try. George Harvey produced quite a few
and Joe Humphrey's continued Harvey's experiments. I also use a Terrenzio braided leader (as opposed to furled) on one line, and a Quigley silk furled
leader on another. These...

I tied my own softer butt leaders until recently. Terenzio Zandri makes silk leaders that are a supple smooth extension of the fly line. I use the 9 footer (
he calls it 3 meters) and 6 footer on all of my silk lines now. It soaks up some mucilin nicely and floats a dry to the water more delicately than anything
I've ever used....... the 9 footer will turn over 6 feet of 6x tippet for spooky fish very very delicately. In any event a stiff butted leader makes a
hinge effect that is...

From my experience, most of the silk lines have such a fine taper that you could almost do straight tippet on them or at least step the tippet down with a
couple different sizes. Another thing that I have done is bought a silk leader (Terenzio or Phoenix) which goes down to even a finder diameter than the acutal
silk lines do. With that setup, you can definitely just add tippet to the end. Basically you will just have to find what works and feels good to you and your
casting stroke. It...

according to the info I got from Olaf:

"The diameter, rule of thumb, for all types of lines, is the butt of the leader is 2/3's the diameter of the tip of the line."
Using this rule, if the tip of your silk line is .020 then 2/3's equals .013" which should be the butt of your leader. The key is knowing what the
diameter of the tip of your line actually is.

Building a standard leader calls for a stiff butt material. Olaf recommends a soft...
