I am a BIG fan of the selvyt bag. They are good looking, practical and easy to handle and when you wrap the reel in a piece of extra cloth or felt before you place it in the bag, it is also reasonably protected. I have been hunting for vintage Hardy selvyt bags first, then switched to the later blue/grey bags which are actually as close a remake of the originals as can be (I actually cut away the modern "House of Hardy" labels from the outside of the modern bags - the old ones had...

Gentlemen.... that noble bag is called "Selvyt"...remember it well. It is an honest reel pouch and way more handsome than anything in neopreme or naugahyde. I'd prefer a custom leather bag like that shown above , but no one has offered me one.

I like the idea of do it yourself and sometimes it works... it works for you and that is all it counts. From the river to house should be fine if your careful. The bag will protect the reel from scratches but will not do a good job of protecting the reel handle from weight on it that could bend it out of shape.

Recently I bought a few Hardy neoprene cases that are about $20.00 and are 4mm thick. Good looking and come in three sizes...

oldboyscout, I would look at putting some type of cushioning material (ie. foam) behind that velvet as wood does not absorb impact near as well as hard leather, the impact will transfer to your reel I suspect.

An aside.. I got Mr Zhu to send me a leather reel bag (with another order) for 7$ Haven't gotten it yet, but I'll report. I've been playing with little wooden hinged-lid boxes from a craft store, about 5"x5". I'm going to line them with velvet or something. They're too big for my fishing bag though.

You want to keep your reel in a brown paper bag thats great........and those leather bags are great MFRS............I do agree with bow though......I kinda like something a little special and appropriate vintage wise for my special reels..................if I can..................!!......its all fun though!

Rich, I do enjoy classic reels, as classic as I can afford. The hard leather case is the safest in some conditions, but if you don't have these, as I attest to, this is a nice alternative. It gives very little bump/drop protection but it has a handle, unlike the hard leather case, fits in the glove box nicely and conforms to small spaces better. If it is in a car accident tight in a glove box, this beats the hard case on the passenger seat or on the floor somewhere. This handle...

The lack of padding makes me nervous for travel. However I freely admit to gear protection / maintenance paranoia. If I dropped or accidentally bumped a reel out of the back of the vehicle while loading gear, I think a cased reel handles this better. I have a couple that came with bags and have always added a padded case of some sort. If you move your gear in a bag of some sort and are likely to put your reel safely away with your rod first (watching the car lean get vest / waders off...

Gary - nice bag, how about you just find a very well used one and then stamp a 'D' somewhere on the inside?
btw it is not dissimilar to the ones that my Bogdan's live in and I find them extremely usable and useful,
I have not found any at $8 new but have found a couple for similar money on yabe in suede.
I use them for reels being carried in a fishing bag - less bulky than hard...

Scientific Angler's used to sell buckskin bags like that for their series of System reels (Hardy Marquis or Viscount reels, engraved with SA brand logo.) I have one. Works good.

Any bag is better than none, as far as cushioning from bumps and falls. I buy those cordura nylon camera bags for my reels, whenever I find them cheap at yard sales or thrift stores.

i know your reels gary and i still have the hardy 2 7/8 i got from you , i know you have that little mint 3 inch dingley that once was mine , your taste in reels is same as alot of us , thats all i was trying to come across , we both collect ol english reels and dingleys mostly , i also know your rods and the fish you chase , was only saying in my words you have classy taste in your reels

my 2 cents comes from making that same mistake , i have had the finish come off a reel , same as i have had the finish come off by useing wd 40 , i'm not saying the bag is no good , there is no reason to soak a reel in oil , if it's wet dry it out and lighty oil it , then put back in the bag , i just find it funny that a reel worth great big money is not worth the little bit to have it in a correct bag or leather case ,

this to me is like haveing a dickerson rod and putting...

I thought I would mention/show this reel bag. It was at a farmers market, as a small coin/jewelry pouch, and I asked the guys if he would make me a couple to fit 3 3/4 " fly reels. This is what it looks like and for $8 bucks you can't go wrong. The leather is so soft and would be especially good for the leaded reels; it can do the job of the syvelt bags that are getting tougher to find.
