I will be travelling with family to Yosemite for the first time in June and we are to stay at the Wawona Hotel. Does anyone have experience staying at this
hotel or know if it is a decent place to stay. I personally am not terribly picky about accommodations but my wife will be with me so I was enlisted to find
this out...

Also, I would welcome any fishing suggestions for a newbie to Yosemite and the Lake Tahoe area where I will be for a couple
of days as well. I hear it is stunning and...

Greg,

If this is your first time to Yosemite then you are in for a treat.

There was a national parks TV show on this week that featured Yosemite, might be repeated again later this week? I don't recall the channel, but I'll
see if it shows up in the Tivo list of upcoming shows. One point that they did bring up, do not leave FOOD or anything that looks like food or stores food or
smells like food (toothpaste etc) when you are out of the main part of the valley floor...

All great advice -- again, be sure to go up to the Meadows. The drive is wonderful. Lakes on the way are astoundingly beautiful. You will take many pictures of
the glaciated terrain.

Fish Saddlebag Creek and (my pref.) the Dana Fork for fun. These are rushing streams when water is up, tho Dana is longer and flatter in places, and you may
fish an 8' rod, use high floaters for dries (Humpies, Wulffs, Trudes) and beadheads to get down. Patterns can be common attractors, GRHEs,...

We stayed just outside the south portal at the Tenyna Lodge. Not cheap, but was easier to book than anything in the park. Ahwahnee is best in the valley itself
and is something above the rest of the lodging, IMHO. Wawona is long drive to valley floor and so staying outside the park wasn't much different than the
Wawona. You won't be spending much time in any room so it doesn't matter except for cost. Wawona also has the only place to purchase a special fishing
permit needed if...

Keep in mind that a lot of fishing in the tahoe area doesn't open until July 1, so check the regs. Definately plan to stop at the Tuolumne Meadows. As
searun mentions, Lee Vining Creek flowing out of Saddlebag Lake is a good place to fish. Especially if you are a beginner or have kids. Don't fish
Saddlebag Lake, the lake is suffering because of the draught. It's a pitiful sight really. Lee Vining Creek above 120 is planted but it's a great place
to practice sight fishing as...

here's a second vote for the wawona brunch. the exterior of the hotel is beautiful to see. and yes, watch out for deer and be mindful of the speed limit
all along the route within the park ESPECIALLY as you approach that hotel. the rangers had stepped up enforcement over the years and june will be the start of
the peak season for visiting. if driving in the evening and night, be very very watchful for deer on the road, as well as the occasional black bear. the south

The Wawona Hotel is on the top of the ridge before you drop down into the valley. There is a nice stream there.
There is also a fabulous little golf course if you are so inclined.
Deer wander the cousre and grounds.
CAUTION: The dear look tame but are wild and unpredictable. Stay away! Especially caution your children.
Too many tourists have been unexpectedly gored.

Be sure to visit Glacier Point.

You will also want to go to the Valley.

I haven't stayed at the hotel, but years ago when I visited the Merced River that runs through the valley held some nice rainbows and browns. Use long,
light leaders - it's a malasses slow moving river and it's clear as a bell. Also, if the snow has diminished enough when you're there drive over
Tioga Pass and wander the high meadows around Saddlebag Lake and creek. The creek held smallish browns and brookies in an absolutely stunning alpine setting.
Wildflowers are incredible...
