Purchased a rod from Marcello Calviello a few months ago and paid an import tax after receiving the rod and billed by Fed-ex.

Are there taxes when a used rod comes from Canada to the US?

What I found out is that from the around 100 items I send with TNT from around the world to the US worth between 50$ and 2500$ only 2 got a call to pay
import tax and paperwork from TNT. This 2 insisted to send there rods to there business address. After some fighting with TNT the could make clear that the
rods are for there private use and have nothing to do with there business and they don't had to pay for any paperwork or tax....

In response to your question the answer is maybe. It all depends on the original manufacturer. If an item was manufactured in the US there is no duty or tariff
owed if it is bought in Canada and brought back to the US. If it was manufactured outside the US tax and tariff may be owed. All international shipments are
supposed to be accompanied by a detailed bill of lading (in triplicate) that states inumber and description of items, Harmonized import code and declared...

The Federal Excise Tax (what eebarral is referring to) and US import tariffs (aka customs duties) are two independent things. According to the Harmonized
Tariff Schedule of the United States (2009) (Rev. 1) fishing rods (Heading 9507.10.00) imported into the US are subject to a 6% duty with some exceptions based
on trade agreements and/or where they are originating.
