I'm redoing an old Heddon trade rod and have a quick question.

I have applied multiple coats of thinned varnish to the wraps and they look great, but I also got some of this mix on the blank, and not evenly, either.
I'm afraid this will be noticeable when I varnish the entire rod. Will this show up? If so, how do I fix?

shader brush to put on the bulk of the varnish on the thread to within a 32nd of an inch or so from the end of the wrap, then use a very fine tipped pointed
brush, I think it's a #1, but not sure... i'm still at home, not at the shop or I'd look, to put the varnish on the very edges. With your rod in

It will show, and how much depends on the thickness of the ridge left by the wrap finish. I carry the wrap finish out onto the blank about half the length of
the foot. After the wraps have set up, I smooth off the ridge with #600 paper and hit the whole rod with 4/0 steel wool before the final dip. I tried keeping
the wrap varnish off the blank and fiddling with the over run with varied success. Carrying the wrap finish onto the blank a ways allows you the work it

Alcohol will remove it easily but it can be tricky if you have to work near the wraps. For working near the wraps, scraping with a razor blade will remove the
varnish nicely and will allow you to get in close to the wraps.
