His early rods were faster tapers, and probably not your cup of tea. He's moderated his newer tapers, and I like them better than the earlier rods. I've fished his 8'3" prototype and also cast the 8' version of the rod. Both are nice, though I'm partial to the extra length of the 8'3". I'd classify it as more a 5/6wt (I like the 6 at pocket water ranges).
