One month ago, I had the good fortune of fishing Mossy Creek in VA guided by Colby Trow and slayed the river catching and releasing 30 browns using a rod he
provided which was graphite.

Just got back from fishing Hazel Creek, NC this Memorial day weekend fishing bamboo(Sweetgrass 6'9", 3/2, 4 weight Penta, and Rick Robbins
7'0", 3/2, weight). Landed fish with dries and nymphs with a strike indicator, but when I switched to fishing with streamers couldn't hook any....

Thanks for all the replies. I agree too many variables. The stream was bigger as opposed to Mossy which was fishing from the banks. The bamboo was lighter
weight and probably not designed for streamer fishing. The graphite rod was a bigger rod and stiff and fish seemed to hook themselves. There clearly was a
rod bend in the bamboo with the fish strikes as opposed to the graphite which was stiffer and likely resulted in a tighter line. Most of the strikes occurred
not when the fly was...

Interestingly enough, Joe Humphreys (of Penn State, Joe Harvey successor fame) suggests streamer fishing with the rod held perpendicular to the fly to INCREASE
the amount of slack in the line - exactly opposite of saltwater style. He contends that trout inhale flies rather than bite at them, and therefore need enough
slack to suck them far enough into their mouths to get hooked. Something to ponder...

You say the rod would bend with the fishes strike... did the graphite rod also bend with the fishes strike? I bet not as much, creating a tighter line which
helped in hooking the fish. Just my guess with the variables that jump out in the wording of your story. Fish will of course hook themselves easier on a tight
line, than a tippet that either stretches or less force due to the bend of the bamboo rod. The main variable was the rod you were using and you didn't have
a guide with you....

Carl, Quashnet was correct. Too many variables. If the wing on your fly was too long they may have been hitting behind the hook. I doubt the cause was slow
reaction. Most fish attacking my streamers hook themselves. But, I'll tell you, I fish streamers and bucktails a lot, and every once in a long while, I
have the same type of day, plenty of hits and very few hookups.

Carl,
Thirty fish on Mossy? I'd be happy with one. What flavor Powerbait were you using?
Was there a reason you weren't fishing bamboo? What flies were you using? I ran into a local there once who said that he only fished streamers on the
creek. Does Colby work for a shop or lodge?

There's too many variables to know the answer with certainty, but I'm wondering whether your strikes on streamers came after the fly had drifted well
below you. A straight or nearly straight pull from a fish directly downstream of your position is less likely to result in a good hookup than a pull from a
fish located across stream or above your position, regardless of the type of fly. Otherwise it is hard to see why streamers wouldn't work, if the streamer
hooks were fairly...
