Here is later Hawes, 8'9 3/2. This rod has a very smooth medium action and amazingly light feel.

I have gotten a few requests for pics and questions, off thread, as to whether my new Kosmic was a Hiram or Loman Hawes. It is a rod made using a Loman Hawes taper, however, it is a contemporary rod made by Hal Bacon under the reconstituted Kosmic marque which Mr. Bacon had negotiated to retain at the time he sold the Payne name and bulk of remaining shop. Pictures would not advance analysis or add to the catalog from the standpoint of antiquities nor be of historical benefit - other...

Dr. Stein, Greendrakes comment was not meant towards you. We are not supposed to name the major online auction sight by name due to the problems it has cased in the past. Nothing was meant towards you, he was only making the comment that the same person who recently sold an 8014 was also now selling a Hawes in case someone here wanted to try and purchase it.

those pics would be very welcome! I still stare at times at the pics in "land of little rivers" of the leonard rod shop with Hiram Hawes in the background. Cant believe this guy has made my rod no. A171!! Really makes me sentimental.

Dr. Todd, Per this question (not Brandin!) Check out the first post in this thread (page one). I think it's from BDCanerod..but he seems to have initiated this thread in 2005 with remarks about his 8' Hawes. I wish I still had mine...(dumb guy...idiot!)

This is great information. The Gnome is building me a 7'4" mortised rod based on a Hawes taper. I believe that mine is one of three or four being produced by Jeff using this specific Hawes taper. Jeff, you should chime in and tell us a little about the Hawes rod that you used/miked for the latest rods you are building. Ric

I took a few minutes to look at the Canterbury, Connecticut census pages and was unable to find, until 1930, anyone in Canterbury employed making fishings rods, or "poles" depending on the census taker's aesthetic, other than Hiram. His son Merritt was working in 1920 making fish poles in 1920 in his "father's shop.".

Of somewhat more interest is the fact that the 1920 census says Hiram Haws was both a "farmer" and a fish rod...

No one has mentioned it yet but the person who just sold the Dickerson 8014 at the auction place no longer referred to by name,also has a 9 1/2' Hawes up for auction right now.In case anyone is interested.

The ferrules are pretty amazing. I was very lucky to be on the phone with Bob when he took in my rod and a 9 footer from an older fisherman who was thinning his collection. Rods were both all original and in nice shape. Sometimes Bob will apply an overcoat to older rods whose original varnish is in need. The 2 Hawes rods were both A-OK so many decades later and in need of nothing. To be honest, I first picked it up because at the time I was on a quest to get one example from each of the...

I agree! Aapgap, Your rod looks exactly as mine did before I had it refinished. Evidently, it was originally blond, as mine appears above. When it came back, I was shocked, to say the least, that all that rich color was mostly in the old varnish. Still, I wish I had kept it...and, in its original condition. According to Keane's records, my rod was delivered to A&F in 1920. The ferrules popped better than most new high-end rods...after 90 years!

Wow! Great information, and further evidence that Hawes is truly one of the overlooked (if not the MOST overlooked) titan of his era. The rods pictured are phenomenal, and as Hal Bacon notes, ahead of their time. I was always under the impression Hawes made more rods, but evidence suggests they are rare. Maybe buyers are reluctant to part with them???
