What the heck happened to Hiram Hawes???


Was checking out the Hawes rod on the unmentionable place and it got me thinking. His name is almost never mentioned in discussion with the great rodmakers,
except perhaps in passing, but anyone who&#39;s been lucky enough to own a Hawes rod knows it... ]]>

Loman Hawes taper, however, it is a contemporary rod made by Hal Bacon under the reconstituted Kosmic marque which Mr. Bacon had negotiated to retain at the

rods, or &quot;poles&quot; depending on the census taker&#39;s aesthetic, other than Hiram. His son Merritt was working in 1920 making fish poles in 1920 in
his &quot;father&#39;s shop.&quot;.

his collection.  Rods were both all original and in nice shape.  Sometimes Bob will apply an overcoat to older rods whose original  varnish is in need.  The 2
Hawes rods were both A-OK so many decades later and in need of nothing.  To be honest, I first picked it up because at the time I was on a quest to get one

			<description><![CDATA[ I agree!  Aapgap,  Your rod looks exactly as mine did before I had it refinished.  Evidently, it was originally blond, as mine appears above.  When it came
back, I was shocked, to say the least, that all that rich color was mostly in the old varnish.  Still, I wish I had kept it...and, in its original condition. 
According to Keane&#39;s records, my rod was delivered to A&amp;F in 1920.  The ferrules popped better than most new high-end rods...after 90 years!

			<description><![CDATA[ Wow! Great information, and further evidence that Hawes is truly one of the overlooked (if not the MOST overlooked) titan of his era. The rods pictured are
phenomenal, and as Hal Bacon notes, ahead of their time. I was always under the impression Hawes made more rods, but evidence suggests they are rare. Maybe
buyers are reluctant to part with them???
