Hey freestoner - that is the rod that i got from you last year, and your description and explanation is right on the mark. It has eight guides plus the tip and
stripper. The rod cleaned up very nicely, and I think I can use the original guides on it - they're in decent shape. As I mentioned, the only non-original
items will be the wraps and the varnish. So far, it has been a nice project to work on, and I am kinda getting a kick out of the Paul Newman family connection.

Thanks...

I'm thinking I may have sold you that rod- in any case, it's good to hear that it's being recommisioned.

As I recall, the 8 1/2' Fly Queen I used to own was a middleweight rod, a fairly stout taper, like for a line between 6 and 8 weight. I'm thinking it
had 8 guides on it, right? 1 stripper, 3 snakes on the mid, 4 snakes on the tip (or maybe only 3, for a total of 7 guides.)

In my experience, the heavier line weight rods don't necessarily improve...

Going through the same dilemma with 2 of my recently varnished rods. Both are less collectible than yours, though. I agree with the difficulty of this
restoration/refinish decision - bothered me also.
I cut the difference - a beautiful lightline 8.5 Montague trade rod received one extra guide on the tip section ( a vintage stock guide) to make it have 7
guides plus tip and stripper. This is a fine rod, but will be fished greatly and there really was too much line slap with the original...

Thanks for the comments, guys.

Pete, as far as non-original territory, I'm not sure what constitutes that - but I'm still relatively new at this. I have all the original guides, hook
keeper, and tips - the only new addition would be the thread and the varnish (unless I add guides, then I'll get some Snake Brand guides). I'm still
debating what to do!

Any more opinions?

In my opinion, if you add one more guide than was originally on the rod, then you have gone from restoration to refinish. Big difference. Again, this is just
my opinion, but if you add guides, why not just use flex coat on the wraps, but a foam grip on it, a fuji reel seat and shoot it with an automotive clear coat.
It would look more modern and better, but THAT is a refinish, not a restoration. If you truley want to restore the rod, then put it back original, even if
you have to go...

Dean,

Seems to me that you're already in non-original territory with a rebuild, so why not make the rod as good as it can be, with the extra guides? You'll
be happier with it, and if you do a good map and keep thread samples, you can always redo it to original specs if you want to sell it later on.
