Taking advantage of a holiday get together with family, I drove to Bailey Wood's Classic Sporting Enterprises this past week. Bailey lives an hour from my sister's home in Vermont.

Bailey's shop is neat as a pin. A quick tour showed off the Hardinge Automatics, the Bridgeport with reelmaking fixture attached, as well as some machinery especially dedicated to ferrule...

Chris,

That reel is coming along nicely. Your comment about the jigs and fixturing is spot on, but look at it this way, once you're jigs and fixtures are completed, you can use them over and over again, saving you bunches of time you make a reel that size. That's why if you go to a machine shop with a small job, you'll likely be charged more for the setup time than the actual machining time.

A day off...finally! Did some more work on the vom Hofe fly reels. Lots of fixtures needed to do the most simple of machining!

Tapping rings for side plates.

Here's the man, at age 80! A medical misadventure has him out of Dunsmuir, but close by in Redding, CA. Fred Gordon, long-time friend took him out today. We made the boat ramp today, 09 09 09 at 09 09! Fred took over and then Joe.....WHACKED EM!

On the way back to the nursing facility, I asked Joe if he was 80 yet. "80 in May of this year. Born in 1929."...

Chris, saw that rod in action all week, and the smile on the guys face when he came in the shop after he caught that HW rainbow. What a nice fish, and there was no set in the rod. The area he caught it there should have been, he had no where to run.

Chuck - the reels worked fine.

I used a cork draw bar drag reel for most of the Taimen fishing. I had not posted photos of this reel but you can view it in my images - folder "Salmon Reel".

I did catch one on the simple 3" click/pawl trout reel - no harm done, but the reel sure did sing.

That is an amazing fish, and the scenery! How did the reels function? I presume they worked well after the size of that fish. Did you use the reel you posted the drawings of?

Chris, looked at your website and your rods are impressive. Out of curiosity, was the fisher using your rod targeting steelies or just ran into an unexpected one?

that's pretty good for you , says alot about your rod , did he get a set in it after that fish , kinde reminds me of lee wulff and his salmon fishing with such a small bamboo rod
