Scarf or make new tip?

I have an old Phillipson Paragon with a busted tip right above the wrap on the last guide. Is there a general rule of thumb when deciding whether to scarf a
tip or just scrap it and build a new one. Does it matter that a scarf would be right under the placement of the guide?

Thanks all,

I'm with Art. I try as much as possible to put as much of the scarf joint under guides wraps as possible, especially on tip sections, which are generally
broken near the first or second guide from the top. You've got a lot of leeway when you are scarfing in a new section with a simple break like that near
the tip - it's totally up to you as to where to actually place the scarf joint. It gets a lot more difficult if you are doing a compound scarf, such as
you might do if the the...

Scarfing under a guide will do two things for you. One, it will help to hide the scarf. Two, it will also help the scarf joint, almost like a repair wrap. I
feel that that is the prefered spot to do a scarf.

Good luck with it.

You will probabally get opinions both ways. It should not hurt a thing to scarf your tip. It won't matter if a guide falls on the area of the scarf.

I scarfed an 18' section on the tip of a two-handed, 8 weight salmon/steelhead rod then took it steelhead fishing this spring. Fished it hard for a week
with no ill effects. There were guides on both ends of the scarf joint.

Good luck with the project,
