Silk, tight coil remedy?

I've recently restored a 40yr old fly line from an old reel. (see Classic Reels, history of Duncan Briggs).

The silk line has come back, clean as a a whistle, but after reversing the DT probably for the first time ever, the hard coated silk remains in tight coils.

I've soaked it in warm water and looped it in larger coils on a line winder, but once it gets back on the reel... boing, back to small tight loops.

Anyone dealt with this before?

Aaron that is a great idea. Make sure you advertise the lines as pre-nylon like pre-embargo cane. That way you can easily get 90.00 per line.

Hi Warrick,
The problem you mention reminds me more of oil impregnated Nylon lines tha silk ones. They look alike... but are not. Take a lighter and burn the very end : if
it's silk, only ash will remain; if it's Nylon, it will melt and leave a "bead" of plastic after you've blown out the flame. The coils
I've had in stiff silk lines work off very easily with Mucilin and casting, and do not come back once the line is broken in.
You will see that silk is so...

I'd recommend attaching it between two trees slightly stretched and grease it with mucilin and leave it a day or two. Then coil it in big loose 3 foot
coils and stash it in the closet for a couple of days and see if it still remembers those small coils.

I don't store mine on my reel. I store it on the struble line-winder and have never had a problem. Then again, mine's not 40 years old either...but
it is about 8.

I am sure that this question has been answered before. How do you tell if the line is silk or nylon? I have several lines that were on some old reels that I
bought over the years. How do you tell what the line designation is? Is there an easy way to tell if it is WF or DT or level?

what i have done befor for this same thing is lay it all in a card board box , the end you need is the tight coiled end , i like a stair case railing the best
or a wooded dowel from any hardware store like home depot , just keep working that line back and forth over it and it will get better , what your trying to do
is the same as taking a long taper leader that is not straight and running it through a rubber leader straightner to bring it back as new , correct and
straight ,...
