I just got an email announcing a clearance sale because:

"Simms has decided to discontinue all felt sole boots due to the transference of didymo and other uglies from stream to stream."

I have no financial interest in this and won't mention the fly shop. You might want to watch for a sale near you... or, stop buying felt soles.

Can the other wader makers be far behind in not wanting to be left out?

The Alaska Board of Fisheries voted in February to prohibit use of felt soles for wading in freshwater in Southeast Alaska effective January 1, 2011. There
will be a similar proposal taken up next winter for all of Alaska. TU's work with the manufacturers was very timely and was a major factor; now they will
take this up for the statewide proposal.

I didn't even know about didymo at the time. I used to have felt, but I'll never go back to felt unless they make me. Since I don't really do

In NZ, felt has been banned for over a year. In this country, TU is trying to have felt banned as well; I think 2011 is the goal. In NZ the guides are very
conscientious about soaking their clients' boots every night in a solution that kills didymo and are also good about explaining to clients the reasons why.
Also, at airports in NZ they often give out spray bottles for treating boots to anyone arriving in the country with fishing gear. Hope that guides here will be
as good at spreading...

I understand the merits of non-felt soled boots but you guys are right. There are plenty of places for didy to take root in your equipment. That includes,
waders, boot seams, gravel guards, wading staff tips, flies and the list goes on and on. It "may" slow it down but banning felt boots will not stop
it. Only behavior will stop it. That, my friends, is the most difficult challenge I think.

It's a real possibility, Uni. New Zealand outlawed felt as of October, 2008, and I believe several states are considering legislation. So... I guess the
message is be careful where you spend your money.

Although I can't recall the source but I recently came across an article wherein the author cited a study comparing the effectiveness of rubber soled boots
vs. felt soles regarding New Zealand mud snails and the study found that the soles made little difference due to all the crevices in the laces and tongue where
the little buggers can hitch a ride. I don't recall that didymo was addressed in the article.
