I cannot tell a lie (at least not about this), but I was given the bug by reading Gierach. Up till then, I was an unabashed graphite rod guy, who had moved into the extreme end of lightness - tiny reels, 3 wt. rod (back when a 3 wt. was about at the bottom), #26 midges on the San Juan. I've said this before and I'll say it again, the only thing that matters in this business is that you have fun. There are plenty of guys who have more rods than fish that they've caught. It doesn't matter as long as that's what they enjoy doing. One pitfall that makes some collectors lose interest is when they start buying pieces not because they love them but because they have collector value.

trust me on this , don't ever get into collecting classic reels at the same time as collecting bamboo rods , you'll never sleep and talk about being broke , i was into reels along time befor this bamboo bug got me , worse thing i ever did was have 2 guys from utah show up for fishing and they brought some of the nicest bamboo rods i ever seen ,about 15 rods,

next thing i know i was hooked bad for wanting them better rods , i aways caught fish on my...

I was thinking more along the lines of political purge than medical. Although it might be considered a form of painful elimination.

Jim: Just read your post....you already have focussed your collecting....you are collecting sheer enjoyment...you love these rods and who the heck cares, as long as you enjoy them....just tell the family to line your casket with them and keep harvesting.

As for me, I find that most of my collection is comprised of Lost Souls...seems like most of the rods I own have some issue, be it a mid 3/4 inches short or a mis-matched wrap or an "invisible" wrap that isn't so...
