Redoing a Heddon trade rod that had black painted ferrules. Ferrules were shot, replaced with Golden Witch and left them bright. Now that everythings
wrapped, and a few coats of varnish on the wraps, but not the whole rod, I have a hankering to blue the ferrules. The ferrule wraps are black and I thought
about wrapping all the way up but decided against it at the time. Any pointers or cautions?

Guess I'm being picky, but what does it matter with replacement ferrules? If the GW ferrules you mention are those I'm thinking about, you now have
SuperZ style ferrules rather than Heddon style stepped ferrules.

Of course if you just like black ferrules and having replacements doesn't bother you, then go ahead and blacken them.

Bill O.,
I took your caution to heart and stripped off the ferrule wraps - I hadn't thoought about how any varnish on the ferrule would leave a silver spot.
Thanks. Steel wool and acetone to get the ferrules really clean, then used Brass Black I finally found at the local gun shop. Wasn't sure it was going to
take, but in the end the ferrules came out almost black - they look great! Re-wrapped and ready for the final finish.

Good point, Bill. I'd personally be inclined to strip the wraps from the ferrules and re-wrap after bluing, especially with easy to match black wraps.

Since you asked for "cautions"... make sure that when you varnished the black wraps that the varnish didn't spill over slightly onto the
silver ferrules. If it did, it will seal the ferrule from taking the blue and you will get silver rings between the wraps and the blued portion of the
ferrule.

You could rig a simple dipping rig (piece of string tied to the other end and looped over anything high enough to give you control over how deeply into the jar
you go) to dip the ferrules in Jeff Fultz's "Tru Blu." The dipping period is less than a minute, so, with careful masking the male and stuffing
the female to protect the mating surfaces, you could do it without damaging the ferrule or the wraps. Tru Blu is non-toxic and pretty benign stuff.

I just did a Heddon that had some of the paint knocked off. You can see a pix on the fiberglass board, if you like. I bought some cheap black nail polish that
listed alcohol as an ingredient, thinned it a bit with additional alcohol, and gave the ferrules a couple of coats. A perfect match. Varnish over that, as Art
suggests. Don

Heddons were Jappaned.
You could use Aero Gloss Black (from a hobby shop), mask it off and use some black enamel spray paint, then varnish, or a black sharpie type pen and then dip
it in varnish. Lots of ways to "skin the cat".

Enjoy..
