A friend recently retired and as a gift I decided to try to make a presentation wood box for his new 8013. I'm not a woodworker, but was pretty happy with
the results on my first try:

The wood is cherry, planed to 5/16, with 60 deg angles put in with a table saw. Outside edge of each plank is 1-3/4 inch, which makes a box with flat-to-flat
dimension of 3-1/4 inches. A little bigger than the regular wood boxes you see, but I found that if you're going to lay out the 3 rod...

Thanks for the tip on ultra-suede, Rob.

Your boxes are beautiful. I'm looking forward to one day having the chance to cast one of your rods. Maybe at a show or meet.

Lee - Nice box - appreciate the nod. Try ultrasuede instead of felt next time as it is spot cleanable and washable - used for yacht interiors, etc - it will
hold up much better than felt. To note the latest wooden Pentalux cases now employ recessed strap hinges - no longer using the piano hinges as they are not as
sturdy as the newer ones... Here's a few pic's of the one you must have seen. Keep up the good work!

Lee: I have been a serious woodworker for over 30 years. Have reproduced several 18th century museum pieces, amoung many other furniture projects. From what I
can tell by the pictures, that case is one fine piece. I'll be bringing one of mine to the CRR for the silent auction. It's nice, but not nearly as
fancy as yours. Lou B.

Ahh, that explains it. That makes perfect sense. Of course if you had finish sanded prior to assembly, you only would have lost "time". As it
looks now, you probably realized "damn, this is a beautiful piece of wood, why hide it under the felt?"

Been there, done that (specifics are different, but overall feeling is the same). Try a good piece of black walnut sometime; hand rubbed oil finish brings it
out (think the stock on an old quality SxS shotgun).

Yeah, Mike, that's like the guy building a slim-butt 3-piece rod who gets the ferrules mounted, glues on his cork, then goes to slip the pretty knurled
winding check over the ferrule and... Whoops! Ferrule's too thick. Smack the forehead and change plans.

I originally thought I'd line the entire box with felt, so i only lightly sanded the insides before glue-up, but then changed my mind later and had to sand
the hard way.

Looks good. You could always presand the planks before glue up, then you'll just need to touch up sand any glue squeeze out. If you already thought of
this, sorry, didn't mean to restate the obvious, but it's one thing that people overlook in their desire to see it put together.
