Been there, done that (specifics are different, but overall feeling is the same). Try a good piece of black walnut sometime; hand rubbed oil finish brings it out (think the stock on an old quality SxS shotgun).

I originally thought I'd line the entire box with felt, so i only lightly sanded the insides before glue-up, but then changed my mind later and had to sand the hard way.
