I just bought two furled leaders and have a couple of questions. Do I have to apply mucelin or any type of floatant to them? If so, about how often. Also,
my leaders have a very little metal ring to attach tippet to. I asked for them without, but they shipped the wrong ones. If I kept these, does the ring at
all effect the bouyancy?? Last question...who are the best makers of these leaders? I bought mine for LaFontaine's site.

Thanks!!

I apply floatant to them just because over the period of a day on the water, any leader will accumilate gunk on them and have poor floatability over the course
of a day. Do this at the end of one of your trips on the water - take a clean white cloth and wipe down the forward portion of your fly line. The dirty
streak on the cloth is gunk accumilated from the stream water. That same stuff gets accumilated on the leader and helps it to start sinking. Whether furled,

I believe the metal ring is a time saver for the maker, they don't have to put a loop (Shorb, or whatever) to finish off the tippet end. I've started
making my own, same 6/0 tying thread, treated with floatant, either Terenzio or Red mucilin.
I tie a shorb in the butt end, and ~12" of 3 or 4x in the tippet end loop(s) with a clinch knot and reduce from there.

from my experiences.

If I apply the Musclin before getting in the car to drive to the stream,

the leader will float all day; but if I apply it stream-side right before getting in the water.

it's only good for an hour or so.

John Quigley's furled leaders are IMHO, hands-down, the finest furled leaders out there. For me, the 6/0 Danville leaders just can't be beaten. And

Another vote for Quiggs. I've had a few and they're the best I know of. For my small spring creeks I get the 5 1/2 ft bright green ones. No, they...

CR,
If your leaders are made out of mono then you don't need to apply any floatant, but it won't hurt either. If they are made out of nylon or silk thread
then some mucilin, or other floatant, is in order. The metal ring should not affect the floatability at all. I can't speak about all the different makers
but I have used the ones from Blue Sky and really liked them. I now furl all of my own using 6/0 uni-thread or Danville monocord, and I treat mine with
mucilin....
