Mine too. Hemingway can be tough on his "heroes."
They get bumped and jostled by terrible ironies. But
they find beautiful moments, too, in the most difficult
circumstances. Santiago's baseball talk when the sharks
are shredding the great marlin--comparing his wounded
hands to DiMaggio's bone spurs--that I think is beautiful.

That passage is my favorite in the book, and the sole outing that doesn't revolve around dissipation. The scenery is rendered so wonderfully. And the joking between the two friends is affectionate and funny. It's a great read. Yeah, the McGinty. I'm currently reading "The Old Man and the Sea" to my son, and it remains as beautiful a book as ever.

Some years ago I had a fishing partner whose father-in-law swore that a little tobacco juice would only enhance the general attractiveness of any underwater offering. He particularly liked it on stonefly nymphs and nightcrawlers.

After buying LOTS of books on soft hackles, both by modern and older authors, I've noticed that the info in "some" modern authors writings are not exactly correct when they supposedly quote / restate some of the info from the older works and quite a few of the dressings / pics of the older patterns aren't always correct / true-to-form with the original authors' dressings.

As I mentioned in a previous post, one of my favorite aspects of fly fishing is discovering a new fish catching trick to add to my bag. In some cases, this may equate to rediscovering an old technique that I haven't used in awhile.
