I discovered the Herters rod wrapping vise while cruising the bay this morning. They look cool and they seem plentiful and cheap (about $20-40).

My question is, has anyone tried using one of these things? Would it work better for my infrequent restoration jobs than my current fancy settup: running the
thread through a large cookbook and adjusting tension with my elbow while I turn the rod in my hands?

cheers, Jim

It does work great. (once you get rid of the dust size pieces from the plastic, or worse yet the white fiber spools)
