I think the "improvement" that Golden Witch did was to grind that back plate smooth..

It does work great. I discovered the Herters rod wrapping vise while cruising the bay this morning. They look cool and they seem plentiful and cheap (about $20-40).

My question is, has anyone tried using one of these things?
