sorry for your loss brother. We lost my golden retriever Madison earlier this year and I can honestly say it is one of the most painful experiences I have ever been through. I know these words do not ease your pain, just wanted to let you know that we feel for you and will keep your family in our hearts. It still amazes me how close we become to dogs, I know it is a blessing, but with that it sure hurts when the time comes.

So sorry for your loss.

About 3 years ago, I lost three of my best friends in the span of a year. I've had dogs as short as one year, and as long as sixteen years. It all hurts the same. My 15 y.o. is watching me now...

Take heart, it won't be long til you remember her with smiles instead of sadness.

My wife and I started that conversation about another one at least 6 months ago; this week has been one of the roughest I've ever had in my life. Mike, my wife and I were in your shoes in December when Sky, our Shiba of 15 years had to be put down because he was in pain from the kidney disease. We cried for a week. He was very special to us because he was a returned puppy to the breeder as someone couldn't handle him.

So sorry for your loss. I've had one or two dogs with me almost my entire life, and the memories of those gone brings both great joy and sadness. I'm definitely giving extra treats and hugs tonight.

Mike, I am sorry about the loss of your friend. Having owned labs for most of my life, I am also faced with making the same decision you have made, my chocolate lab purchased for my son has gotten to the very end of where he can go. But I just can't bring myself to do it. Sometimes I wish I didn't feel so strongly about him.......it would make this a lot easier.

All of us dog lovers fell your pain and share with you that wounderful feeling of unconditional love that only a dog can give. About the only thing God didn't get right was for dogs to have a life expectancy as long as us humans. Cherish your memories of your beloved companion.

Mike, I think I spent a $100 or so on different skunk solutions until we happened upon the one I mentioned.

My condolences mer. I know that loosing a pet is about as traumatic as loosing a family member, well a human family member. They love us without any condition other than being fed and taken care of.

Mike, very sorry for the loss of your dog. I understand the pain you must feel. We lost one of ours about 1 1/2 years ago.The best dog I have ever had.
The hard part was after the injection as we watched him slip away, I had to immediately go to work where no one really understood the pain I was feeling.
By the way my dogs have been blasted by skunks on four different occasions. Mix peroxide, baking soda and a little liquid detergent to help the solution adhere.

Sad? Yes, a bit, but only because she's not here so I can scratch her head and rub her belly. On the other hand, happy because of all the memories, and because all the extra treats everyone else is giving their dogs tonight.

An example of some of the memories: each dog tangled with a skunk, about 6 months before the end. Bucca, at almost 12, with gimpy back legs, managed to actually catch it. He ran under the neighbors back deck, wouldn't come out, but when I told him to...

Mike,

While walking a favorite loop in the woods with Jack today your post brought to mind a a line from a great song by Jerry Jeff Walker: " his dog up and died, he up and died, after 20 years he still grieves ". It sums up how attached we can get to these faithful companions. Fortunately, there is something about a new puppy that really rejuvenates the spirit when the time is right for one.

Mike, I'm sorry to hear about Simi. She most definitely is family and the loss is a difficult one. My Lab is now going on 11 and although still very much a puppy, she is starting to show significant white. I'll make sure she gets that extra scratch tonight.

I have walked at least one dog every day at 0400. Today, I walked alone. Yesterday we had to put down Simi; hopefully in her 15 years we gave her half as much as she gave us. As big as the void is, I can't imagine how much worse my life would have been without them.
I'd like to ask those with our four legged companions to give them an extra hug and an extra treat for me.
