Probably this is a question for the rod makers out there. First, let me state that I own and like 3-piece rods because of the ease of transportation on
planes. Other than that, I have not thought too much about which is the better design for casting and fighting trout - 2 versus 3 piece. But I have my eye on
a 7 1/2 - 3 piece 5 wt. rod and I have been thinking about several issues. One question I have is that due to the second ferrule in 3-piece designs, does the
tip section have more...

The second ferrule has nothing to do with tip stress. It does put more of a load on the mid, and through it the butt section. Tapers that are designed to be 3
pieces, or have been modified from 2 piece for that service, have more cane in the mid and butt. If you take a one or two piece design and just cut and ferrule
it for 3 pieces, the rod will slower and floppier from the additional weight load. The tip only deals with line weight and fish stress, which don't change
when you cut the...

There is nothing in the design of a 3 piece rod that makes it inherently more likely to suffer tip breakage. We've got over a hundred years of experience
to back that up.

99.5% of all broken rod tips are due to carelessness and operator error and about 90 percent of those involve automobile trunks, doors and improper transport
method.

Classic or modern has little to do with the equation, though SOME Heddon rods have crummy ferrules. It's the ferrules that fail in...

Depends on whether you're talking about a vintage rod or a modern made rod. The modern made rod tapers usually have a little more at the ferrule stations
to allow for the little bit of extra stress and there is really nothing to worry about. However, a few of the vintage brands had problems at times (i.e., some
Heddons) and you would occasionally get breakage at a tip ferrule. There are pros and cons to each design. If its a relatively modern 3-piece I would say go
for it, especially...
