Megoff titanium reels are made in the Ukraine. The company has been in business for quite a few years now and its product lineup is constantly upgraded. The VR23, evidently now called the S&P 23, is still available new and is quite attractively priced for a titanium product. There has been quite a bit of collaboration between Hardy and Megoff of late so I would guess this reel was used as the model for the Marksman. Considering how little more the VR23 is in price it's amazing more...

Until recently they were still using old photos clearly showing "Made in England", whilst their Managing Director was boasting to the business community and in newspaper interviews about how he had "turned the company around" by outsourcing.

Well, I guess he wasn't too concerned about hiding the information.

I agree with JPHardy......there is no way I would buy a Hardy made anywhere but in England...........its just the way it is for me.....its what flyfishing means to me and how I have my own personal tradition with it....thats all.....................!!

If you read some of my previous post you will see that I agree with most of what Richard was saying concerning Hardy. They are a big company who's "classic reel" department and sales are tiny in the big picture. I know the increase in price has come partially from the exchange rate with the pound. I'm ok with that.
To be "pretty forthright" their website should say "made in China" or wherever it's made and so should the reel. They also should offer some...

I'm actually not against any particular country; if China were to produce high-quality, classic-style fishing reels, that's OK by me. I just hate the idea of Hardy mysteriously selling reels that cost more with what probably amounts to major drops in their production cost. Do they think that consumers are that thick? Three weeks ago I picked up a Cascapedia in a store that someone had ordered. As I looked at it something seemed not right and I couldn't place it at first. It's going to seem obvious when I say it, but it didn't at first. It was missing the "Made in England" on the side of the reel. When I asked to see box, the box was same as the boxes that Marksman and the Zane.

I went to look on the UK sites and saw that the Cascapedia's had gone up in price....

today's marketplace is the key. I agree with you that having a reel in hand and comparing function ends up being most of the decision when you get there - I remember petting reels in fly shops in the early 80s. Those days are all but gone. Within a 120-mile radius of me, there are two fly shops where there used to be two dozen. Of course we've added a Cabelas and Bass Pro. But I'm sure that Bass Pro and Cabelas sell 30-50 times as much from their catalogs or online as they do to...

I used to live in Portland, Oregon and visited Kaufmann's quite often so I know that they can afford to stock just about anything they want plus they seemed to carry a lot of weight with the manufacturers. Maybe Marriot's and Dan Bailey's are the same. I know a lot of Kaufmann's customers could afford just about anything as well. I do like Kiene's shop, no pressure, no hype and a friendly helpful attitude, at least that's been my experience so far.

Yes, drop shipping works quite well for the catalog guys and for folks that know exactly what they want but my experience in retail sales leads me to believe that most sales are best made with the product in the customers hand. Now Hardy has a great history and tradition but in today's marketplace but who knows just how far that will go towards persuading old and new customers to purchase their new reels? I know that Hardy reels have a special place with long time fly fishers and...

Kaufmann's, Dan Baileys, and Marriott's still stock Hardy reels - in their retail stores - because they are traditional and they want to have "everything". They won't carry a ton of stock, but they have them. At least the last time I was in these shops they did.

it's very easy for a catalog merchant to not maintain an inventory.

they can and in some cases, most often, have zero inventory of the product you order.

They forward your order to their supplier/wholesaler, who electronically pays them their profit and ships the item directly to you.

I love classic hardys.........Im basicly not interested in most modern reels.........however...........the Angel......kinda interests me..............Ive never seen the insides and havent really seen anything written about its performance...anyone have one out there that might give me a little review and maybe a few pics .....preferable the bigger sizes with the disc drag.............!!...........thanks........!!
