Of course, effete San Franciscan A-Hs like me find the whole genre deeply troubling. The melodramatic dialogue, the facile division of the world into good and evil (and when Native Americans are involved this can get ugly), all the big talk, simplistic thinking, and violence really sums up a lot that is wrong here.

The Searchers is my favorite. An off-beat favorite is "The Rounders" with Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda made in the mid-sixties. I like this western because it is set in and around Sedona before Sedona got built up. It is also quite humurous involving a drunk bucking horse. Having lived in AZ and fished that part of the country it is cool to recognize places where you have been and see what they were like pre-development. Actualy one of the breakfast restaurants they ate in the movie...

"Last Train From Gun Hill" and "Lonely Are the Brave" If you can find the m watch them and enjoy. Kirk Douglas is in both. Faves of mine for sure.

Unforgiven is my favourite. Shane is terrific too, my Brother-in-Laws middle name is Shane. His mother was an Alan Ladd fan. My father was offered and turned down the job of carpenter on Fistfull of Dollars. He had just bought a house (£6000 about $12000 at the time) and he could not be guaranteed if there would be another film made at the set.

I am absolutely stunned that nobody named The Frisco Kid, with Gene Wilder and Harrison Ford (right after he did Star Wars). It is without a doubt the greatest Rabbi/Cowboy movie ever made.

I see Clint Eastwood's name come up on this thread pretty often and I would like to tell a Clint story. I have a friend who was in the Marines stationed in California at the time Heartbreak Ridge was released. Him and some of his buddys put their uniforms on and decided to go to Carmel and have a drink at the Hogsbreath Clint's bar and restaurant. My vote is for "The Searchers". It hits home with me as I have a great uncle, Adolph Korn, who was a captive of the Comanches in Texas for several years. When he was repatriated as a teen ager, he wanted to go back to the Comanches, and never adjusted back to the "white" society.
