Supposedly Lang's will send an ID number or register us before the auction. Frankly, I have to believe their version just because their reputation seems to be very high among those who have long experience with them and ebay's is none too good. The trouble is that without having it listed on ebay many people wouldn't know there WAS an auction of fishing tackle.That's the only way I knew about it in the first place.
I hope Lang's won't cut off on-line bidding...

So-as the dust settles on what happened to the Saturday morning sales which were unresolved for so many people, this is what Lang's and eBay respectively have to say about the matter:

Lang's explanation:

"Your eBay bid did not register in time at the live auction to be implemented by the eBay tech. There is no way to know if your bid was entered a split second after the auctioneer said sold, which may have been the case and would explain why you did not win...

I received my two rods from Lang's today and everything is in order, subject to one slight issue, which actually works in my favor. Lot number 149, the 'rare 9' Leonard 100 year commemorative rod, is actually an 8'6" Leonard commemorative rod. R

Got a call from Christina at Lang's today saying they are fed up waiting for ebay to straighten anything out. She told me that ebay refuses to let them end ebay bids before the auction happens and won't let Lang's have any information at all but insists an ebay rep has to be there doing the bidding for ebay bidders.
They won't bend or change this policy for any reason or for anybody and Lang's can't sway them. They apparently have no answer for what if...

It sounds to me like you should offer them your services as it is unlikely, if not impossible , that they can unravel the truth on a blunder of this magnitude. It may be the only way for them to salvage their reputation, and my sense is that if a press release announces you are on the case the recipient of your rod may well come forward with the rod and a plausible explanation ( perhaps that he had been out of the country ) ,enabling him to avoid the ultimate public humiliation...

I was handed a tag.
I was tying at the UFT / TU booth. Armands friend (B52bugger). I also was going to share the fly tying materials, but Bass ProShop beat us to it.
In fact, the opening night is tomorrow at Gilette Stadium in Foxboro. Ill take pictures of the stuff they bought at Langs.
Lefty Kreh is going to be there.

I have been attending Lang's Auctions for some time now. This year I came away with some great bargains. The everything was fine with me. Auctions are not predictable. This Auction had all the item we all talk about. What is there to complain about.

As for not allowing internet/ebay bidders---Not everyone lives on the east coast and has easy access to live bidding.

There has been steady progress right from the first year John and Debbie took over the operation of Lang's Auctions, and I'm speaking as someone who badmouthed the Ganung's operation in the beginning. I was not that impressed with the first auction they held, but I think I was asking a bit much in light of the situation. They have steadily improved and the latest complaints seem centered around the failure of people to get something they had high hopes of getting. I suggest your...

The hope is that they will use a cut-off date in the future a couple of days ahead of the auction so they can gather the pre-bids themselves and not have to rely on ebay for information at the last minute. Ebay's reputation has been shaky all along. I have been buying things off of ebay because they were available and Lang's wasn't until just lately.

In thinking about the unfortunate results of some of Lang's auction problems and the heat generated by people on the short end of the stick, the problem is not originating with Debbie, John and their crew. Imagine visiting a neighbor during a thunder storm, the power goes out and you start giving your host the gears because of no lights. Is it the host's fault, the end user, or rather is it the provider or some one or thing in between who has failed? As to fees etc., Quill has spelled...

I just want to say that Debbie was very apologetic and explained what had happened. She also explained some of the problems they were having because of the ebay problem (which sound like a real pain in the butt) and that ebay was not being very helpful or taking the problem very seriously (no surprise there). A little communication goes a long way.

One has to attend one of these auctions to really see what is involved and the behind-the-scenes work that goes into producing a world class operation. I would suggest that those who bitch go to other online tackle auctions and see if they are as well done or cost less. I think not. I do not hear too many complaints from those who were there. If you can not attend personally, and if you have issues with online bidding maybe it would be better that you not...

Holy Smokes!! Did Leonard and Payne's take a hit on most items at this auction?? Just finished perusing the first half. What's interesting is that many prices reflected how some members here feel. Dickerson's went sky high, while some superb Payne's and Leonard's were real deals. Many Garrison's were more less status quo where Brandin's went through the roof!

Some of the antique items went for more than Garrison's, etc. Go figure. Whatever floats...
