Heddon gold wraps |

I am restoring a Heddon #13 Featherweight. Interestingly it has the gold wraps with black tipping like the #125 and other top end models rather than the red
with black on the 3 piece #13's. I am having a devil of a time trying to duplicate the opaque antique gold wraps. I have tried many different combinations
of color preservers and silk colors. Mike Sinclair recommends YLI 215 and Lacquer. I have either wound up with yellow opaque wraps with light gold threads or
copper colored wraps with 215 or Persall's antique gold. Does anyone have the key to this dilemma.
Many thanks for any suggestions, -Doug |

Hi Doug, I don't have my copy of Sinclair's restoration book in front of me, but I'm pretty sure that the #13's were wrapped in orange tipped black.
The 8' 1 3/4F in my meager collection is. Could the gold color you're seeing be a faded out, old lacquer and varnish tinged orange? I've
certainly seen examples where the aged wraps on a Heddon didn't look anything like the colors recommended in Mike's book due to the old silk fading and
the finish age darkening.

If I remember, there was a time that some had olive wraps.

Hi all,
According to Sinclair's book the #13 came wrapped as follows: 1930 - 33, green #24 or red #10 tipped with red#10 or green #24 (green tipped red is earlier) 1934 - 38, 1940, orange #8 tipped with black #1 1941 - 43, grey #31 tipped with black #1 I have an orange tipped with black #13 and before I refinished it you would swear that the thread was gold. Once it was removed you could see some of the original orange color on the bamboo side of the thread. Dave

Doug:
Can you post a picture of the wraps? |

Doug,
Is this the color of your wraps? I would say this is the gray with black tipping. It appears to be olive in color after varnish. I don't know if there is color preserver or not. I have an early 1930 President with the same color wraps and it is gray tipped black also. If you need to see the 50 or any other 13s to compare I have all the cataloged wrap versions of the 13, I can post if needed. Hope this helps Richard

My Heddon #13 has gold (possibly faded orange) wrap but no black tipping. The spare tip section has olive wrap. Also it has an uplocking reel seat. I read somewhere (possibly on this forum board) that Heddons with the name in a spiral around the rod like the one in the picture and the one I own were made between 1933 and 1939. Was there that much variation in the 13's in that time period or was the black tipping and downlocking reel seat on more expensive 13's. I know this may be a stupid question, but I am just now learning about the bamboo rod business. |

Fixed up an Expert one time. Replaced with Belding Corticelli light gold with 3 coats of Bullseye clear shellac. Matched perfectly.
