I'm not going to mention names, but I ordered two rods from a very well know builder. The second rod was ordered about 3-4 months after the first. I was told that the second rod would be finished within a very fast time frame (about 6-8 months and lightning fast for a builder of his caliber) and first rod ordered would take about 11-12 months. I sent a deposit for each rod.
During the 3-4 months between orders he raised his prices. So far no issues. I called at about the 7 month period to inquire about the second rod and was told it was about finished. At that time, I canceled the order for the first rod. It hadn't been started yet. I asked about the deposit for this rod and was told that he doesn't refund deposits. So I asked if it could be applied to the other rod....the answer was no. How about if I order another rod from you in the future?..?...the answer was no.
We had never discussed the refunding of deposits and I didn't make a big deal about it. I don't order rods willy nilly and back out, I truly felt bad about backing out in this case but I was changing jobs and I was a little concerned about the unfunded liabilities I had out there. I realize that my personal issues aren't his problem but I felt that since the rod hadn't been started that there was really no reason to keep my deposit, or not to apply it either to the rod I did buy or a to future rod. I'd hate to have to put my lawyer cap on every time I place a rod or reel order with someone and ask for a written agreement that references all of these details, I hope that's not where things are headed. What are your thoughts about this?

The economy falls, the orders (and income) go in the toilet! The economy
booms, I'm busier than a cat covering up %$#@. Still not going to get rich! One of the former Winston makers and I once had a conversation about rich
rodmakers... he said the only rich rodmaker he knew, spent all his money making rods! Regardless of how many orders, you can only make so many a year without
killing yourself! I had one year when I put out 47 rods. Now I know there are makers doing more than that, and more power to them. Almost killed me! (That
was the year before I had the stroke, btw... connection??? I dunno...)
