Thanks,

Where to Buy U.S. tied flies ? |

I really hate to pay $1.85 to $2.25 for flies that were tied in Argentina or Thailand or elsewhere overseas where the tier got 14-cents, if that. No matter
what flyshop you walk into these days, chances are 98% that's what you'll get. I'd rather pay U.S. prices to a U.S. tyer even if the quality is
equal.

Pete,
Here's a recent thread with some good direction for U.S. tied flies. http://clarksclassicflyrodforum.yuku.com/topic/16414 I recently purchased several of the Little Dixie Flies (LDF) and was most most pleased with the quality relative to price. Hope this helps. Bob |

Another vote for Blue Ribbon Flies. They sell locally-tied flies in a separate bin from the imports and most of them have also been designed by Craig M. or his
shop staff. They also do custom tying of anything you want. Blue Ribbon has probably the best and most innovative selection of flies in the greater Yellowstone
area, and that's saying a lot with so many fine shops and tiers in the neighborhood.

Pete,
If you take the time to look, there are a lot of master fly tyers in the US that still tie flies. A.K. Best hangs out here as well as a few others. Mary Dette ties wonderful flies but you'll have a wait period. Her grandson Joe is a wonderful tier to. Poke around and look around. What you're after is availaible, just not to the lazy fly fisherman. What you're after requires patience and time....same as it always was! Even "back in the day". In this day and age of "I want it now!" mentality, good things come to those who work hard, have patience and value relationships. ...same as it always has been. Be patient and forge relationships and you'll find what you're looking for.

I have purchased many flies from Little Dixie Flies (LDF) in MO. I believe all their flies are tied in the US. Very nice quality, service and prices. They have
a printed catalog and a net site.

Pete,
While not tied local to the rivers you mention the Eldredge Bros Fly Shop manager, Jim Bernstein, and some of his staff, have fished that area and their fly shop, in Cape Neddick ME, has only flies tied by local and contracted US tyers. http://www.eldredgeflyshop.com/ their email is on the site banjo

I hate to toot my own horn but I have tied commercially since high school. More than half the flies sold in Mary Dette's shop have been tied by me over the
last 12 years. Love making the classic wood duck winged flies, wets nymphs and streamers but have made everything but deer hair type flies. I am allergic to
deer hair. I learned from Elsie Darbee at 12 and been tying for people and shops since. At times it might take a while to get flies to you due to the amout of
orders I have but as a rule there is a turnaround of about a month. Eric Leiser also tied for Mary for years and when he stopped tying volumes of flies for
Mary I picked up his patterns.
My prices are as follows. Standard dries, wets, nymphs, are 1.80 each and 1.70 each when you purchase a doz. of the same pattern on the same size hook. Streamer's Bucktails ect are 2.00 each and 1.90 when you order a doz of the same pattern. Jungle cock streamers are 2.50 each. I build for quality not for speed. Great thread! I have been meaning to ask a similar question for a while. Nice to hear about you Bob. Here's my off the cuff list of places to get flies
tied by one individual or a shop that only sells flies tied by their staff.
Catskills: 1. Mary Dette (and her grandson and others who tie for her shop). If you call her or write with a special order she will be the one tying for you. But all the flies in her shop are marvelous. 2. Rich Bradley (Fir Brook, trib. to Willowwemoc) 3. Frank Kuttner (near the Beaverkill Inn) Adirondacks: 1. Fran Betters (he is trying to retire, his flies are rough - definitely fishing flies!) Nova Scotia: Buck's Bucktails (a school teacher in the Annapolis valley who ties lovely streamers, especially very small ones, can' find his address right now) New Brunswwick: 1. W.W. Doak (Jerry Doak and the two men who work in his shop tie all the flies they sell). West Coast spey flies: 1. Jack Cook (he sold his business, "the Irish Angler" but still ties for them) Other: this last is an option I have seen but not tried. J Stockard has a list of tiers whose flies can be bought through them. If I remember correctly they do this as a service for the tiers. Looking forward to hearing about more! Lawrence P.S. I am assuming that Pete is interested in flies well-tied by 'local' tiers (usually but not always fishermen themselves - Mary Dette has not fished for a long time for instance) as opposed to sweat shop productions. If I have got it wrong and the interest is specifically in USA tied flies, rather than say Scottish (the late Megan Boyd comes to mind), English, Canadian (and now Japanase - Ken Sawada comes to mind), then I apologize. I would love to hear about tiers from those countries who fit the same (hard to specify) criteria.
