In a previous thread, Jeff Knapp raises an interesting point when he says that an A&F Hawes in jasper and red might be wrapped in Tournament colors.
I've been struggling for a while now with the problem of choosing wrap colors and style for restoring an eight-foot Hawes that's currently, but
mournfully, done in a tasteful black.
I currently have records (and pics) of the following wraps/styles, most of which appear to be original. No particular order:
1 - Red (326), untipped, with no intermediates and a 3 narrow - 1 wider signature wrap
2 - Red (326), untipped, with intermediates, and a 2 narrow - 1 wider signature wrap
3 - Deep green, maroon tipping, no intermediates, and a 2 narrow - 3 narrow - 1 wider signature wrap
4 - Deep green, tipped red, no intermediates, and a 1 green - 1 red signature wrap
5 - Deep green, no tipping, no intermediates, and a 3 narrow -1 wider signature
6,7 - Jasper, tipped red, with red intermediates, and a 2 narrow - 1 wider signature (two of these)
8 - Gold, tipped burnt orange, no intermediates, with a signature of two broad gold bands tipped on either end with burnt orange
9 - Burnt orange, untipped, no intermediates, and a 7 narrow - 1 wider signature
10 - Burnt orange, tipped red (shudder!) with red intermediates, and a 3 narrow - 1 wider signature. I hope to God this isn't an original wrap!
There seems to be no rhyme or reason to the use of signatures or, more importantly, intermediates - all of the rods are A&F, but there's a wide range of SNs (all of them in the A series), and two of those without intermediates are among the earlier SNs. Could it have been an option?
The rod I'm restoring shows no trace of intermediate ghosting, and its SN of A 402 is closest to the third rod in my list, so I've gone with the green/maroon 2-3-1 combination - but now, of course, I'm having second, or even third, thoughts. Does anybody have any alternatives I should consider? Or any catalogs that might clarify the meanings of specific wraps?
TIA,
Dave
