casting revisited...(video) |
Lead | ||
|
The topic of casting bamboo and distance occurs regularly on this forum, so thought I'd share this. Just for fun I put a tape down and did a little front
yard practicing. Not record breaking casting, or even my personal best. Just a little demo. The rod I'm using is my standard 8' 6wt., hexagonal,
solid built trout rod. Feel free to comment, criticize, or out-do!

Grin! Nice casting!
For distance casting you'll need a pretty brisk rod (not necessary stiff rod). Which tapered rod did you use? I did notice that the lawn goes down form the point you're casting. So this also means that the line gets more time to descend before hitting the ground. Nonetheless great casting! Jay |

Jay,
Yes the forward slope of the yard helps extend the forward cast. Of course the larger rise in the neighbors yard behind me even more severely hampers my back cast. But as I said, not going for records here, just throwing in the yard. What's even worse is the dirty looks I get from neighbor when I crack off a fly on their front porch! The taper is one of my own and is a relatively stout rod I use for drift fishing. Bill O. www.oysterbamboo.com |

Bill,
So you're not the only one who gets weird looks when lawn casting? Have you tried making HB or Quads for that matter to see if you can build a pure casting rod which can rival the Sage Z-axis'es? Jay

When I practice in the playground at the school at the end of the street usually more than one 5 year old will come up and ask, "What are you fishing
for?"
I love it!! Nice casting there Bill...the downward slope of the yard and the neighbor's front yard behind you kind of replicates real downstream fishing conditions with a big boulder over your right shoulder.....right? Besides,
it's harder to get a good pick-up off of grass vs water. Either way, that's some nice distance casting.
These guys are harsh though, eh? |

Must be faked. Everybody knows that bamboo rods are no good for casting long distances. Nice work! |

One of the best kept secrets of the bamboo fly rod... | #6
|
is the incredible power (along with the inherent grace and beauty) it possesses for distance casting. I recently completed a hollow-built Payne 106 (8.5 ft,
#6) that will cast 90 feet of line with little effort. I'm sure it would throw over a hundred feet if I had only the room in my yard! I know I was always
of the opinion that someone who fished bamboo did so knowing he was sacrificing performance in the name of tradition. Man, was I wrong!
BTW, in my from yard I currently have 3 upside-down trash can lids spaced at 30, 45, and 60 feet for accuracy practice. I'm sure the neighbors think I've gone daft, but who cares? joel |

Very impressive casting! Not just the distance, but also the straightness and accuracy of the line - almost right on the tape with very little slack in the
line. The rod is obviously powerful, but for most of us the limitation isn't the rod, it's the caster. Bamboo is capable of any practical fishing cast
and then some, as you have so graphically demonstrated. Good work!

bamboo - it's more than enough! | #9

Thanks 16pmd. That's just what I hoped to show. It's not about the rod, or the line, or the 100' mark. It's about the fact that
there's nothing you need to do when it comes to trout fishing that you can't do with a bamboo rod.

catfishing? | #10 | ||
|
Hey Bill, I noticed your cat hanging around the periphery of the screen - does he/she go bonkers for the yarn "fly" as ours does?
It's the only "catfishing" I do these days, and it's always worth a laugh, at least until the cat actually catches the $60 line and bites it in half! Very nice casting BTW, especially impressed with the pick-up and straight-line drop, one stroke back and one forward, just the way Paul Young described boat fishing (albeit at 40-50 ft). And yet we all still hear stories of float guides telling us to put away our "dainty" cane rods "'cuz there are some hogs in this stretch." Education, education, eh? All the best, lee |

Lee,
Yeah, I have to keep a close eye on those cats. They wander around all innocent like, then POUNCE! And yet we all still hear stories of float guides telling us to put away our "dainty" cane rods "'cuz there are some hogs in this stretch." Education, education, eh?I recently had a rodmaking student who was all excited about using his new rod on a big guided trip he had coming up. He told me that he had told the guide over the phone that he was going to fish with bamboo, to which the guide replied "Not in MY boat you're not!" It's funny how quickly folks have fallen for the marketing hype concerning the necessity of the latest space age plastic - this years model of course, because last years model is no good now!

...I don't have 200ft of lawn to cast on, so no one will ever know I can't cast that far. Ooops. Did I just say that?

oysterbamboo wrote: On my one and only guided trip, the guide was very uncomfortable about me using a bamboo rod. He was certain I wouldn't be able to fish well using bamboo and was certain I would want to fish his Sage graphite. After much worrying on his part, I went ahead and took his advice, borrowed his graphite rod, and regretted it the rest of the trip. |

Regarding the misconception that Bamboo rods are for 20' casts with dainty dry flies using double taper line....

The Payne Canadian Canoe rod I sold here earlier will do this without too much effort. Used a TT7 on that one. Not too big a deal tho, since Lee Wulff could
get an entire flyline into the air without a rod.
Kinda humbling. gofish |
