Posts: 1 09/05/2008 00:39	Tags : None Just got done reading John Gierach's Fool's Paradise, saw a bamboo rod and old reel for sale, bought it. Know trying to figure out what type it is and if it is worth trying to fix up properly to fish with or if I should just give it a whirl and see how it casts and then hang it on a wall if it does not work. Hoping I can get it up to par for fishing though! All I can tell from the sticker is that it is a Montague and under the logo of the claw and fish are the letters R and A spaced about 4 letters apart?? It is 9', three sections with an extra tip section that has different color threading so it might be a random addition. Came with a cool rod holder thing. There is some damage, one ferrule is smashed, and there is a crack in the wood where the reel sits. Any help on if it is worth fixing up properly or if I can just kind of have fun with it. Thanks in advance for any help. I can try to get better pictures if it helps, couldn't get a clear image of what is left of the sticker. Thanks!

Posts: 1698 09/05/2008 07:59 Admin	From the wooden form case, it's an early rod. And it probably casts with a medium to slow action. With the slight damage you describe, the rod should probably be looked over by someone who restores rods. Try Art Parramoure who's in WI. A genuine expert. His email is mrparramoure at yahoo.com. Otherwise, with a little clean up, you'll find the rod is a great addition.

Posts: 64 10/22/2008 12:21	I suspect your rod is a "Rapidan" which was a upper mid-range priced model. I have a Rapidan which I have never fished but have lawn cast it and it does pretty well with a 6 wt. It is not particularly sought after as a collectible, which gives you an opportunity to do a self restoration. Take your time, take advantage of the vast resources available (extremely helpful folks on this board who will never make you feel stupid) and end up with a very fish-able rod. My 1 1/2 cents worth.
