I started working on one a few years ago, but never finished it. I got the side plates and spools done, but not much else.

Haven't ever tried, seems the "raised" part on the rings would be the biggest challenge.
Let me know how it works out. I would love to see. stefan |

I'm currently/slowly making one that will look similar to the Leonard Fairy. Instead of hard rubber side plates, I'm going to make them out of
Delrin/Acetal. Going to CNC mill the side plates. I made some rough side plates, but was not real pleased with the looks, so I am altering their
design/shape. Not sure how they did it in the old days on manual machines. If you going to make them manually, I'd be interested in learning the process.
Tks......

mark i saw you design on another site , and i know the side plates are labor intesive but you design seemed pretty intresting , going sit down with a buddy and
go over a design . i love the old phil brook & paine reels , with resin side plates but thinking about spending the time and money on titaum , and making
one in 3'' 1/4 and 4 inch for a spey rod . will do a photo s of the build we start .would like to incorporate a drag into the larger model , then the
click n pawn .

nysguide wrote: I cannot encourage you strongly enough to do a prototype in Aluminum first! There are numerous challenges to just making a reel that works well, in addition to the difficulties of cutting titanium. Once you've made the first one the second one is always easier. It will also let you work out some of the bugs you may not even see in your design until you start playing with it and fish it once or twice. A 4" raised pillar reel for a spey rod sounds like a very cool concept. Unique indeed. Good luck, Mark |

A raised pillar was what I made first. That was a mistake!
If you have a good design you have made before, clip off the corners, and make it raised pillar. If you go with a Julius vom hofe/Kosmic design that has the square ears, than it is just a matter of setting up the rotary head on the bridgeport and plotting how many degrees per cut to swing it around. Turn everything first on the lathe and then make a fixture plate that holds the face on the rotary. As you can see from this one, get the angles correct or the ears may get a little thin! Hope this helps. Jon |
