On the Alm in upper Austria |

Peter Schuster shared the attached photos, and the following note, with John Bradford. John, in turn, forwarded such to a few of us. Peter is fishing a
Walter Brunner made rod. I thought I would share the photos and
Peter's short note. Ric

It has really been a great fishing day - a day, I happily was able to share with one of my best friends, Marcus Ruoff - who is seen on the top pictures, which
I took. The two other pictures were taken by Marcus Ruoff. Marcus fished a Brunner rod (Amabile 2000) and I used a rod, made by Bjarne Fries, a Katana 703.
Trout and Grayling were rising the whole day, and they were difficult to catch. The stream was like an opened book, you just had to read it and enjoy.

Ric, thanks for the post. And Peter, you and Marcus are fortunate indeed to have shared a day on such a lovely river. My only Grayling were in northern Canada
about 7 years ago and I remember what fun they were.... but they were not in waters such as those.
Grüß Gott!

GEEEZZ....that's what I said aloud when I looked at that first picture. That water...man, o' man! I had to look twice at that Grayling and the gin
clear water. My mind said "Bonefish" initially.
What a fine piece of river. Thanks for the post Ric and Peter. This was impressive. Jeremy. |

Wow, awsome pictures. When I was younger I spent a year in Austria and fished on the Traun. Not nearly as picturesque.

That middle picture is one of the finest fly fishing pictures I have ever seen. And the first picture is remarkable as well; the natural beauty of the river
takes your breath away. Thanks for sharing your images.

Allthough the Alm is
only 50 miles away from where I live, I have never been there before, because we have many other beautiful rivers in Austria |

I haven't fished the Alm yet but like many Austria rivers this river has a pretty high license price. Somewhere around $70-80 a day if I remember
correctly.
Well it does keep the crowds away... Jay |

From what I know, the Alm is 50€ (75$) per day!

Yes, the Alm is about 50 Euro a day, but in comparison to other rivers in Austria it is rather cheap. (for example parts of the Ybbs are more than 100
Euro/day, Steyr 100 Euro/day ...)

Still a lot of money. At least compared to US/Canada standards.

Not a lot of money for a great day out fishing here in Europe, Jay.
I much rather pay 50 or 75 Euro a day for a great day on a great water than 20 or 30 on an average to poor water. This is not because I have heaps of money to spare its just that the relatively few days out on non-local waters I like to spend on the best I can afford. I draw the line on 100Euro-waters that are not really worth what they promise. Unfortunately waters like this are out there... |

I wasn't comparing fishing ticket rates for us Europeans but for our American members. They aren't used to these prices or even private stretches.
The prices for rivers in Europe has risen the past years, at least since the introduction of the Euro. The quality hasn't improved to justify the price increases in my opinion. Unless a great river equals river full with hatchery grown fish... Jay |
